Sorry for the late reply WM. I can’t change the mountain layout/contour because I’ve messed up and merged the initial mountains with the background artwork. So I’ll have to stick with what I have now. I can only draw some vectors over them respecting that outline and change the fill/pattern as I want.

How about now? You should be able to overlay your background and blend it to this. Then add your text and stuff over again. And then add mountains.

WM, that's a very good work with the 'Clone stamp tool' (is it?). I've tried something like that with Fireworks but should have done it with the Photoshop because I didn't like what I was getting... Anyway you're far better than me with those tools. I'm more of an Autocad guy :)

I'd imagine it is the clone stamp - it's one of the simplest and most commonly used methods of taking things out of backgrounds; or extending something in the background etc, etc...

Yes it is the clone stamp (and some marque tool cutting and pasting) about 25 minutes.
Are you going to give the new mountain idea (like i posted) a try?
I hope so. They would fit well with your style.

Sea Dragon is cool too. There is also one I saw first in the legend. That reminded me of the one in the Midgard bonus legend as well.

WM I've used the ridge lines example from the link you've sent. I've also used your modified map, so things could look a bit better if using the original one.

Benn, I've tried that halfway you've suggested, made the cliffs a bit more darker.

I think that this last option will fit better with this concept, the mountains are far more creepier this way....

I would try to shade the new mountains a bit more and make the shadow side much darker. I personally think that approach looks the best and fits with the rest of the map. But either way it looks awesome.

I still don't like the mountains, they differ from the map a lot since the rest is all vectorized: They look pixelated

I think they look alright, as they match the shoreline.... but the shoreline could afford to be lightened up a tad and the eastern sides of the mountains could use a little lightening up as well.

By the way, I still think the bows in the bow & arrow icons look too much like the letter B.

I suggest tweaking it a bit, into something like this:

Image

It's a very minor issue though so if you don't want to change it it's fine. It's just been bothering me, being a perfectionist... like, you couldn't shoot a bow like that, the string would snap your fingers off...

no... that version is not finished.. actually is more like a test.

I'll let the poll run for a couple days more, but I think that we have already a winner.... WidowMaker prepare your weaponry, I'd like you to step in and give a shot at this mountains, I'll provide you with everything you need :)

I don't think this should be a popularity contest. The artistically most coherent version is the original restyled version. It best represents the original view of the map's creator and provides the feel of a black ink on parchment feel that made the feel of this map unique. This is not anyone else's map but the author's and should be allowed to retain its original feel and integrity even if other Foundry members would have drawn it differently, as long as game play or clarity are not an issue. Mountain shapes, shades and sizes should reflect the original feel and design of the author, and although anyone should be free to comment, a solution which the author does not consider to be the best or most representative of his original intent should not be imposed just because of an opinion poll or because someone who has the power to give or withhold a stamp has a diffrent view and must be kept happy in order to have this map progress, even if it is not really what the author wants to do. The mountains issue in this map is the typical example of map micromanaging and delay which is entirely NOT within the scope of the Foundry's tasks. Suggestions - sure; but once these have been done, the author should ve given the latitude to choose the option closest to his original vision and his choice accepted, even if it does not correspond to the day's majority poll or the preference of the Foundry supremos.

Well, I can’t be blamed for not being democratic! :)

Though I prefer the original restyled version (#3), I’m whiling to cede and go with the majority, for the simple fact that we’ve been stuck on this map for ages discussing mountains. And I pretty much feel that this project deserves a lot more than being held eternally by such kind of details.

Fortnightly Review:

  • The poll on the mountains seem to be pretty clear, #4 is the clear winner. Finish making those mountains.
  • There seems to be 2 different points of view along the western coast. The angle is off creating the shadow and cliffs there, it needs to be consistent.
  • Legend descriptions about the army circles on the mountains - as iancanton previously said click here to ians original post
  • Finish the borders on the bottom of the map closing the territories Aesir-Vanir, Volupsa, Ragnarok, Kaball
  • Are the little trees impassables? As such they should be mentioned in the legend.
  • What does the "S" letter near villages mean?

There has been no update since the last fortnightly review. If there is no update by the mapmaker by the next fortnightly review in roughly 2 weeks this map will be considered stalled and moved to the Recycling bin.

But here it is, the voted version for the mountains:

Good to hear this map is back on track... hopefully Napoleonic Europe will be as well :)

For the most part it looks good, the major land borders are still too pixelated though.

Minor suggestions:
Make the dragon black?
Add some ships in Vanaheim Bay and towards the south.
I don't like the port symbol, I would prefer something that juts out into the sea, like a dock.
