AADOMM is the mapmakers home, sorry.
At least it is for most of the people who have quenched maps before.

what will people do in this group that isn't already done in the map foundry?

Pork suggested that a group of Foundry regulars form a usergroup dedicated to making maps. The idea was to pump out maps at a faster rate than we would be able to do working individually. Hopefully we will be able to avoid a lot of the usual red tape that is the hallmark of the Foundry and make this a streamlined process.

SS, this is pork's idea, so why don't you let him start the thread? :?

Maybe your maps would go faster, but It'd slow down the rest of the foundry a lot.
With all you guys posting in that group, it means less comments going to the regular mapmakers in the foundry.

Well he is kind of, um how do you say, a forum n00b.
I like him but so far he has expressed not really knowing how this place works so I thought I would help him out.
I like him and his ambition but posting The Map factory in ideas did not give me confidence in his knowledge

I'm in favour of anything that helps bring quality maps to CC... I''m not too sure how developing maps away from the expert eyes of those who have already been through the process will go - and maps will still have to go through the Foundry, regardless.

I'd hate for you guys to put in a load of effort behind the scenes, only to get frustrated at a later stage. ;-)

No we would just start them and talk about them behind the scenes but the critiques will come from the foundry

Then why not just put those discussions in the Drafts forum with all the other maps, so all the more experienced mapmakers can read them?

wcaclimbing has a valid point... if you do choose to go ahead with it, I'd suggest a name change to something like "The Beginners Map Workshop" or something that sounds a little less official...

The Map Factory is the name of our group. We will NOT have individuals names on any of our maps. All of our maps will carry the name of The Map Factory on them in place of the Author.

I may not know much about all the proper etiquette of the foundry, but I have learned a thing or two in the past 2 months. Like how it is, that mapmakers seem to be competing with each other. And at the same time, they are also tasked to the job of helping to develope others maps.
I believe that this set up is why maps take so long to quench.

Do not misunderstand me. I do not wish to try and sidestep the process. I expect that our maps will undergo all the foundry scrutiny that all the others do.

Our group intends to work together as a team to make some maps, not as competitors. we will work out a first draft and submit it to the foundry, just like everyone else. The only difference being, we are a team, and thus, will most likely produce better first drafts than most.

As for our group somehow taking away from the foundry forum, You could not be more wrong. No one in our group will be visiting the Foundry forum any less.
There are people like me, that for one reason or another, do not have the knowledge or perseverance to see a project through. But with our group, we can work together to see our maps quenched. Some of us will even wear the group sig. to show our participation.

The only people that could possibly be against the formation of our group, are those that are into competing and holding others down. 8-)

What this could very well turn out to be is the Foundry equivalent of "The Society Of The Cooks". A way for those interested in map making to get their foot in the door without having to make a full-blown map all by themselves. That's not to say that the maps will be of inferior quality. I think that some of us who haven't quenched a map yet have shown map making capabilities equal to or beyond those of existing cartographers. The only thing holding us back is the acceptance of the Foundry bourgeois, many who are reluctant to accept new and radical ideas, being content with the random geographical/historical maps being churned out every few weeks and the occasional novelty by an established mapmaker.

It's amazing how much the Foundry resembles politics....

it's worth a try... what the hell, right?

Keep in mind that mapmaking medals are awarded to indivduals, not groups... even though the MapFactory stamp will be on your maps, you will have to identify a mapmaker if you want somebody to get a medal.

that makes sence and may diminish the point of the group, for some members. But this could also turn into a group that just talks about ideas and how or why they would fail(or make it).

He's saying that it might make joining the group a less attractive idea for some people if they still have to put an individual name with each map.
Also, instead of producing maps as a group and submitting them as "The Map Factory", it could instead become a group where people can discuss new ideas and how to make them work.

Well then I shall tell you how I was planning on doing it. Two people from the group will "Head" the project and spend more time then others on the map, they will get the credit but the map will be signed The Map Factory

I think this is a good idea and is worth the try. I wish this group success in it's endeavours.

Hopefully this group will branch out to consider new ideas for maps like fog of war was at the time.

Suit yourself. But I'm with wca and Benn — I think this would just keep the maps away from the majority of the Foundry … as well as the two Foundry-goers with Special Contribution Medals ;) .
But that's just me (and wca and Benn) I guess.

We have discussed this issue already. Most of us could not care less about medels. But, I suppose that we will get together and decide who should get the mvp medal for each map. :D
