Hide/Show Medals on the forum

Postby Shadowstar on Sat Jun 28, 2008 11:37 am

Concise description:
  • Provide some way to hide the medals that appear in the posts of other players.

Specifics:
  • Within someone's posts on the forums, the medals that the player has obtained appear below everything else. Currently, as far as I'm aware off, these medals will always appear. My suggestion is to provide some sort of Hide/Show Medals button in place of where the medals appear right now. Obviously, clicking this would either display all of the user's collected medals or store them away neatly out of sight. Also provide and option in one's profile setting the default for this option, with choices such as "Always Show, Always Hide, Show only 3, etc."

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • In most websites (I'm sure this exists here, too), there is a limit to the size of one's signature on the forums. This exists because, without it, some posts would stretch too large in height, when they are roughly only two sentences in length. In this site, the same effect is caused by the players with around eight or more medals. With not enough room to spread out horizontally (not that I'd want more room, the room alloted for post details is perfect IMO), the medals begin to grow downwards, usually stretching out the size of a post several hundred pixels. With this option available, it will improve the readabillity of the forums while still allowing one the option to gaze at another's medals.

Opinions? Suggestions? Thoughts?

I believe this feature may be included in the next version of BOB (current version is 4.5.3 at the time of posting).

BOB is a community generated script that adds all kinds of functionality to the Conquer Club interface. Read how to Install BOB! to get started ...

I agree, but keep how many medals in total they have won.

@cicero: Doesn't seem completely right to me that one should have to install a script just to cleanly surf through a forum... I often sift through the forums and take my turns on the Wii Opera Browser, and the Wii does not take plugins. I believe some people here might have a similar problem. Some people might prefer using a browser other than Firefox, such as Opera, Safari, heck, even IE7. (Not speaking for myself, I use FF on the comp and will probably install BOB soon.) Wouldn't it be much easier for all these people to include the feature on the forums themselves? You can view the medals without the help of BOB, shouldn't you be able to hide them without his help as well?

@firth: That's good. Perfectly fine.

Medals for CC are still in their early bananas. A few changes, alterations, etc. are planned. I believe we might make the medal icons displayed in the forum smaller, or use a hide/expand method as you proposed. These, and most likely a few other things will come out when Medals go through their next update, but in the mean time, it looks like there will be scripts available for some of these features.

Absolutely Shadowstar, I agree with you. I wasn't suggesting that BOB precluded the need for improvement only letting you/others know of it's existence and features. BOB, by its nature is updated more frequently than the site and at the same time many features which were initially introduced in BOB (or its predecessors) are now part of the site.

I wasn't attempting to provide a definitive response ... but heck that pesky "moderator" tag increases peoples expectations ;).
Thanks for a valuable lesson in moderation Shadowstar :) *

Love the idea Shadow, and have been waiting impatiently for the medals to shrink or disappear from the forums since they came about. Makes the posts huge, the threads longer, and is a total waste of space. See, 3" of wasted space:

I for one think that medals should be as visible, or more so, than your rank. They are a much more accurate representation of skill and dedication. If medals are taken off the forums, then rank better damn well be taken off too.

Don't believe me that rank is worthless? Look at people like Klobber. What he's doing isn't cheating, but it sure doesn't take a lot of skill. His rank will keep going up and up... but the most medals he will ever earn is 6. I'd say that's a lot more accurate.

Wouldn't posting the number of medals do as well?

Anyway, it would be optional. I don't necessarily need to see someone's medals 20 times to know they are good...

And I don't need to see someone's rank 20 times to see that they either (a) are good or (b) just know how to game the system. But one's rank is still the most prominently featured statistic on the site. If you're arguing that medals shouldn't be shown, then your rank shouldn't be either.

But that's just a comparison to something else that's prominent... sorry for taking this off subject. I do agree that the member info space has become a little more cluttered than necessary, and the medals obviously take up the most room. Perhaps multiple things can be collapsed, or like suggested the medals could be made smaller/just the number shown.
