moderation of chat rooms *rejected*

Postby albertq on Sat Apr 26, 2008 8:16 am

i think the moderators should lighten up a bit with the old censorship in chat, and react to complaints they've recieved from people who are unhappy with the way someone is acting rather than reacting to whatever they percieve as being annoying/insulting/whatever.

NOT having a go at anyone here, just saying a little freedom of speech goes a long way. there's scope to allow people to talk more freely but still prevent anyone from being unnecessarily offended

edit: added form

Concise description:
  • Moderators should only ban/kick/warn people in Live Chat if there are complaints about what they are saying from other members, unless the person accused is blatently violating rules (e.g. open racism or using callouts for chat)

Specifics:
  • Mods must recieve complaints from people offended by what someone else is saying before taking disciplinary measures against someone regarding what are they are saying.
  • The mods cannot take action against people in chat over a clash of views or opinion.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • People will be able to speak more freely in chat, without mods who take a dislike to what they are saying shouting them down with threats of punishment.
  • Punishments will only be handed out to people who directly violate the rules of chat (and to all people who violate the rules, not just some)

If you are talking about honest difference of opinion, I fully agree. However, when someone has to resort to swearing, belittling and generally degrading those who disagree -- that is not free and open discussion, its idiocy. To a point, the person just shows his/her OWN ignorance, but at some point it takes away from those who truly like to discuss various things.

There is a line between forceful argument, playful banter and the downright offensive.

I am, however, dicouraged by the inconsistant attitude of a few mods to just dismiss folks who legitimately disagree .. while completely tolerating outright abuse by those they happen to "know" or like. (who have opinions they like). Most are reasonable and fair, but a couple ... could use a bit of education in the meaning of "free and open discourse".

albertq, get over it. You started this thread because your other thread got locked and did not accomplish what you wanted. You are not going to have wicked removed as a mod, and you are not going to change anything with this new thread. Stop complaining.

i'm not talking about wicked. it's just that the mods do clamp down on people talking about completely harmless things for no particular reason. if people are actually offended by a subject that's being discussed then it's fair enough to stop it being talked about, it's just that sometimes the mods just decide they don't like the sound of something and so try and stop people from talking about it.

all i'm saying is that people shouldn't get reacted against like this unless other people are actually complaining about it, otherwise the mods aren't acting in the interests of anyone. in some cases it's just people like you who have decided that someone like me is only going to say something contentious because they are looking for an excuse to provoke someone, rather than out of actual interest or greivance (e.g. i was once complaining about how anti-white racism is uncensored in the chat rooms and a mod saw a couple of sentences and decided i was being 'deliberately inflamatory').

You can say whatever you want, but:
abertq in his signature wrote:THE MODS ARE NAZIS, FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT, DEFEAT THE CORRUPT SYSTEM!

17:17:54 * albertq quit (kicked by wicked, reason: i'm a gay ass nazi mod)
is not helping you out any. I cannot believe what your last post said when you still have this right below it. I do not see how anyone can. If you want people to believe you are actually trying to fix something within the system and not take out a vendetta against one mod, or even the whole system you need to get rid of that signature.

i'm not even sure if all the people who act unfairly against people like me are actually mods though. there are also normal users who will immediately tell me i'm a moron whenever i open my mouth to say hi. they could probably do with learning to speak a bit more civily (i'm not talking about you here btw), and recieving a bit less protection from their mod friends

The forum guidelines apply to Live Chat and mods enforce those. We're not changing anything to let you say anything you want. Everyone is subject to the same guidelines and failure to follow those guidelines will result in warnings, kicks, bans, etc.. Live Chat is not Flame Wars, so you cannot flame or provoke or intentionally attempt to create chaos. If you're disrupting chat, you'll be asked to stop.

that's not what i was saying at all. i mean i've been shouted down for saying compeltely harmless things, and i think mods should be a bit fairer about who gets warned and who doesn't. for example, Herakilla has been rude to me without provocation of any kind and yet recieved no warning, i was threatened with a kick for disagreeing with you over whether global warming is real or not. i think the geniunely harmless stuff should stop being punished, and people who are being deliberately rude should be punished. it's not hard.

i was just using you as an example, seeing as your whole little 'we love wicked' clan does the same thing. it's stuff like having my point of view rubbished merely because it is mine, and me then being told to stop talking about whatever it is that has been laughed at. if i talk about anything even potentially sensitive then i seem to be stopped instantly, despite the fact that i am usually trying to have an actual discussion rather than just hate-mongering

when i go over the line it's fair enough that i'm stopped, it's just that even when i don't people have a tendency to try and stop whatever conversation is taking place.
