PM Mail-Groups

Concise description:
  • PM suggestion, shouldn't really be too hard. How about a way to send PMs out to pre-set groups of people. If you want to send it to clan mates you can set a group for that; if you want to send it to people you mate up with who are not in your clan you can do that also, etc...

Specifics:
  • Probably an entire new page to manage mail groups.
  • Let the different groups be named something to help the sorting process.
  • I imagine a separate section in the area where friends are for mail-groups.
(ie: an HR to divide friends, online friends, and mail-groups)

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • It will speed up sending PMs out to clan/mates/specific groups of people. I know we all have private forums and whatnot, but people see PMs way before they see forums. When trying to set up public team clan games it's hard to get your clan mates in quick enough without others having joined. That could also be solved through the whole 'lock-team' / 'temp team password' thing that had been sugged, but I figured I would put this out there.

    Thanks!

My guess is that you'll have a better chance of getting this if you talk to the people at php. There might already be a mod for it, or someone might be able to make one if you request it. Lack has said before that with some forum things, he'd rather let someone else design it so he could focus on CC-specific tasks.

I believe you mean phpbb.

anyway, this can already be done (you can't make custom groups, but you could mail to usergroups) but, it is turned off.

I will personally contact them now- thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I fully understand and support Twill sticking to CC related things :D

Just went to the website, kinda lost. The Mod would be downloadable per-person, or need to be applied throughout the website (ie: the base code for everyone). Either way- does anyone know the specifics on the version/program we have? There were different mod forums per-version and I haven't the slightest what we are. I'm not tech impaired, just don't know much about the site.

Thanks!

PHPBB3. And Lack would have to download the mod and install it on the forum. Again though, you don't need a MOD. It can be done with the current software, the admins just have it turned off.

So, I would need to simply request the mods turn it back on? Or is it username specific that it's default set to off?

Sorry to be a pain in the ass, haha.

You did the right thing by making this thread, I was just proving that NS has no idea what he's talking about.

I'd mark this one [Admin] (In case you need a next move NS).

Labeling the thread NS needs to do, no? I could change the title if it would help get admin attention/be more applicable (as it's something that simply needs to be turned on as opposed to written/added).

Right, just pressing a button, no coding or anything.

There may be, however, a reason why it is turned off.

Would there be a way to change the subject of the thread to poke someone who would knows attention? Or shall I just wait around and bump it for a couple weeks

Actually, you don't need to bump it.... yet at least

Just wait until a mod gets on and they'll post it in the Mod Forum, the admins are more active there.

Is it really necessary to be petty towards a mod who is trying to help someone. I would certainly appreciate that you're trying to help but your stated reasons for doing so shows an immaturity that erases whatever other good will you might be garnering by being helpful.

Wrong approach. We don't just randomly post things about suggestions in the Moderator Forum. That's why there is a Suggestions Forum. Besides which, I'm pretty sure being able to PM "usergroups" is not what is being asked for.

They are asking to be able to set groups of people which then can then send messages to. Not just usergroups.

I never claimed to know all the default settings/options on a phpBB3.0 forum.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was turned off to prevent mass PM spamming. The more clicks something takes to do, the less likely a user is to do it.

If you really need to PM a bunch of the same users frequently, I would make a list of those players in a PM draft. Then you can just copy/paste that list into the Recipient box when you're ready to send a PM.

Basically. If you don't know, leave it for someone that does.

basically, if you do know, you can give the information without being such a prick about it.

Yeah, sorry I titled the groups 'usergroups' I should have came up with something else- didn't think it would correspond with something already in place on the site.

The subject line does real Mail-Groups, so I suppose that in itself lends to being more than just usergroups, but thanks for helping clarify that optimus.

The groups I'm speaking of would be customized and saved in a section on the left where on/offline friends are listed.

ie: Group name: 'Clanmates' or you could have map specific groups, etc... I just think it would save a bunch of time. If there's already a code to send PMs to entire usergroups I don't imagine it would require much to allot custom groups, though my extent of writing anything computer wise is stuck in 2001 HMTL

I think there is a way to PM usergroups with phpBB3 now, so i dont think you need to take it to phpBB.

I think Twill/Lack turned off the permissions to PM groups because of too much abuse it could be used for; or just never turned it on.

I would suggest that you have in your clan, (you said "PM clan-mates"), you could have a sticky with a clan user list, and any time you need a mass PM - you could just copy and paste that in the PM [To:] box.

Blake take your head out of your ass, it's unhygienic and to be honest; you dont know everything either.
NS was just trying to help and you go snapping at him.

Here's the easiest way to do it right now, and it allows you to have as many large or small lists as you want.

1. Go to your Inbox

2. Click on "New PM"

3. Give your PM a subject along the lines of "Personal Mailing Lists" or "Group Mailing Lists"

4. In the text area of the PM, add in all the lists you want, and separate them with a couple spaces. You could do one that you title "Favorite Players", then hit "Enter" a time or two, and start a new one titled "Speed Game Friends" and so on.

5. Click on "Save" at the bottom. This has now saved the PM in draft form and it will stay in your box until you personally delete it.

6. To view the Lists, go to your Inbox, and then "Manage PM Drafts"

7. Select your list from the PM Draft area and it will open to show you all your lists.

8. Find the list of people you want to PM, copy and paste it into your new message and off you go.

You can update the "PM Draft" that is acting as your address book anytime you want, just remember to hit "Save" each time that you do.

That should help you far more easily, and far more quickly than anything else here.

SOLUTION:

1) Open up Excel.

2) Type each username in a cell. First username in A2, second in A3, third in A4 and so on. That is your email list.

Image

3) Save the file for future use

4) Copy the column-oriented cells that make up the list. (eg - A1:A32)

Image

5) In your 'Compose Message' screen, where there is the field for usernames, Paste the cells

Image

6) Click 'Add' button

Image

7) All users are now added as recipients of the PM

I have been using this method for my tournament of 17 players, and it works a charm.

Thank you e_i and optimus for the solutions, they will most certainly work and require no assistance from the supreme beings.

On a side note regarding this thread.. it should probably be closed before it ends up being FW worthy..

'less you feel the need to move it to FW. Enjoy yourselves if you do =D>

Locked at the request of the OP. Before 'someone' decides to 'help' us all further ...

For the sake of clarity I'm certainly not referring to e_i_pi or Optimus - I second lgoasklucyl's thanks to you two for your great solutions.

And really there's no need to apologise lgoasklucyl, I believe almost everyone understood what you intended from your original request.
