Best maps to start off playing

Postby deronimo on Tue May 20, 2008 8:02 pm

Thought I'd ask the veterans here. I've only joined 1 classic map game so far but would like to move on to others. Also which maps should be avoided?

avoid..age of realms feudal war, checkers, circ maximus
try and stay to land based maps
so classic, australia, world 2.1 britich isles, hong kong, china, etc etc...
stay away from freestyle til u get the hang of it..

Here's an easy rule of thumb: if a map's legend contains instructions above and beyond what the continent bonuses are, you might want to get more comfortable with gameplay and general strategy before attempting it.

your best bet is to get good at one first before trying a bunch of others. may i sugest joining wacicha cook class. he is a great new player teacher. land maps the smaller ones are better to learn on. click on them before joining or starting to look at them. also you may want to look into grease monkey to help you out when your getting started.

Progress slowly through the maps, avoid large or complex maps, especially avoid Conquer Man, at least until you gain few wins under your belt...
Try and find 'favourite' map, map that you personally like....
I prefer sequential play, freestyle has to many pitfalls, especially for a new player..

In two player games, luck has huge influence on outcome:
--- player who goes first has a definite advantage in the game
--- player who has a bad dice in first or second turn will always struggle in the game
--- and of course, player with a good drop will also be much better of than his opponent (with a poor drop)

;)
* Do you have any Scripts installed? They are great help....
("AJAX BOB" Greasemonkey Script by yeti_c is a must have, on complex maps) viewtopic.php?t=33445

I really appreciate everyone who is giving me advice. I know a little bit more now and thanks for the referral about the guy who is a teacher and a player at the same time. I'm checking out some of the maps you guys suggested. I'll definitely stay away from Circus Maximus.

Mentoring Pilot Program [Updated 04 March 2008]

Postby wicked on Sat Jul 14, 2007 11:46 pm
Do you wish you had someone to answer your questions when you first joined CC? To tell you about Greasemonkey and how not to play freestyle? Well why not help mentor a new recruit and share the knowledge you've gained?

Are you an elite player, tired of playing the same old people again and again, hoping for some fresh blood to join your ranks and energize your games? Why not coach the next great player yourself?

Are you a new player completely lost about what to do and how to play? And just what is this greasy monkey thing anyway?

Or are you just tired of losing games all the time and want to get a stripe?

Then the mentoring program is for you! Check it out!

==============================================

Based on the popularity of Itrade's thread, and the fact he was getting overwhelmed with it, I've set this up as a central place for mentors and those wanting help to meet up. This is very informal and open to everyone. Post here if you want to help, or if you want help. Playing in games with your mentoree is not required, you can just offer advice from the "sidelines", in case you're worried about losing points. ;-)

New players looking for help, please pm the mentor. Very few mentors (other then me, I think I pm'ed all my mentees) will pm you. Don't be shy, if their name is on this list they have VOLUNTEERED to help without coercion, just don't spam them or be rude. And if they say they are busy, give them time or try someone else.

When posting, please list either Mentor or Mentoree and skill level.

If you want to be a mentoree, please rate your skill level:

1 - I'm brand new and know nothing about World Domination
2 - I'm decent at the board game, but need help navigating the site
3 - Been here a bit, but need help winning games
4 - Need help with a specific gametype, e.g. freestyle, escalating, etc...

If you want to be a mentor, please rate your skill level and list any strengths:

1 - I know the site well and understand basic strategies
2 - I win a fair amount of games, but play mostly lower ranks
3 - I can hold my own in most games and have played the top ranks regurlarly
4 - I consider myself a top player and an expert on strategy

Strengths:

===============================================

If there are mistakes or changes in status, please note them here and they'll be fixed.

Note: I'll try to keep this updated periodically.

You don't have premium, so stick to classic (Classic maps will fill up quickly)
then try to join 3-4 player games so that your turn comes round quicker. Also - playing 3-4 player games will allow you to own a continent and learn how best to protect it.

start a game on each map and draw your own conclusions.

Just quoting from a thread in the map foundry.
its from a topic where we were trying to decide how difficult each map was. I think it will help you:

This list isn't completely up to date, because some newer maps have been uploaded since this list was made, but it covers most of them.
Coleman wrote:
What we did is put stuff into 4 basic groups.

1) Simple - If you understand risk you can just read the continent values, and jump in and play.

2) Moderate - If you understand risk you can understand this, but you'll need to read a rule or two in the legend first to get it. You could probably still jump in and play and be alright though.

3) Complex - It can be understood, but it make take you some reading and a bit of playing before you fully get it, there are many rules. Can't just jump in and play without reading or you'll miss things.

4) Extreme - You pretty much need BOB (script to help you understand the map) or have an avid background in strategy games before you can understand this map. Even with reading through all the rules you could still be confused and miss things without several play throughs.

Simple

Classic
Africa
Ancient Greece
Arctic
Asia
Australia
Battle For Australia
Brazil
British Isles
Cairns Coarl Coast
Canada
Caribbean Islands
Doodle Earth
Europe
France
Germany
Hong Kong
Iberia
Indochina
Ireland
Middle Earth
Middle East
Montreal
North America
Portugal
Puget Sound
Scotland
South America
USA
U.S. Senate

2) Moderate

Alexander's Empire
BeNeLux
CCU
Chinese Checkers
Circus Maximus
Discworld
Extreme Global Warming
Feudal Wars
Great Lakes
Italy
Madness
Malta
Midkemdil
Mongol Empire
Philippines
San Francisco
Space
Tamriel
World 2.1
WWII Eastern Front
WWII Iwo Jima

3) Complex

American Civil War
Berlin 1961
Crossword
Duck and Cover
D-Day: Omaha Beach!
King of the Mountains
Siege!
Solar System
USApocalypse
WWII Western Front
8 Thoughts

4) Extreme

I would love to suggest a map for you to play...I would say Middle East, since I think it is a great beginner map. but twill would probably call me a racist for recommending it.

It is a nice map though, although it is several shades of brown.

One of the more straightforward maps that you can still have a decent 1v1 on is Seige

I would not play classic... I gather if you were already a RISK master, you wouldn't be asking what map to play on, so you'll get further developing a niche on something that isn't everybody else's bread and butter.

I don't know why you would be called a racist for playing a game of Risk but I've probably missed some feud you have with this Twill guy.

I looked at the Middle East map and the layout looks easy but there's no color. yuck!

I still got these free tickets to the circus that KLOBBER gave me. Being foe'd and all now I can't use them. Here ya go!
 =D>
everybody loves the circus, ha ha ha

have a great time at the site eh
join a sequential 8 player public terminator escalating game or 2. My fav. Maybe I will see ya then, it is good to join with higher ranked players if you can and watch the moves they make. Terminator setting has great regular players in it and they don't get ticked so much if you screw up either. Lower ranks with high game numbers usually are like that for a reason, don't let them throw off your strategy with thiers. See ya in the battlefield
