father's day meltdown

Postby azezzo on Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:29 pm

this couldnt have happened at a worse time. I found this site about 6 months ago, my shrink suggested that i find a new hobby to help me with having too much time on my hands. I've not been coping well this last year. You see my wife left me last summer and took my 2 daughters, mary and catherine. I havent seen them much this past year as she moved out of state. So i joined C.C. last year just before christmas and spend most of my free time here, it takes my mind off of things.
Well like any sunday i got up, turned on my computer and tried to log in, but couldn't. - all day!
But today, to make matters worse is fathers day and i didnt even get a phone call from my ex, my daughters are 4 and 6 so they cant call me yet on their own. So I started drinking, and like an idiot, I went back to an online gambling site , one that i have been able to stay away from for the last 4 months. Needless to say that if C.C. had been up and running like normal i would not have pissed away $6,700.00 today, and now that the booze is worn off i dont know how i am going to be able to pay my credit card bills.
So to all of C.C.'s technical wizards there, please stop fucking around and Finally truely upgrade your servers.

It's not the fault of CC if you have a problem with that sort of thing...

the problem isn't CC's fault.

CC went down around 4am Eastern and only just came back up.

We'll get you something more official as soon as we're sure all the kinks, bugs and turns are sorted to the best of our ability.

We need to get through the tech stuff first.

Don't be too harsh on us, this one was a data center booboo and not ours...for once ;)

Be back soon with a better explanation!

To the front lines!

its not CC's fault. its the data people.

Don't blame CC for your problems.
Find a new hobby. Instead of drinking, do a puzzle or read something or ride a bike or anything else. It can't be that difficult that the only thing that could help you is this awesome site.

I suggest that you
A. go to an AA meeting. they might help you with the alcohol.
B. don't gamble. It always screws you in the end.

I'm beginning to believe the only sustainable pastime for addictive personalities is fishing... it forces you to just sit there, not blow your money, not get into scrapes, and yet (unlike spectator stuff) its a little like gambling 'cause you can always sit for another hour and maybe the big one will bite. You should try it.

Back to your issue there OP... I hate too suggest that you might want to welch on your gambling debt, but speaking with no experience or qualification on this issue, I had the following idea:

1) Gambling on internet sites from the USA (where your cc profile says you are) is generally illegal

2) The gambling web site probably cannot enforce the illegal debt

3) They sure as heck can charge your credit card, but your agreement with the credit card company probably gives you some rights and remedies - depending on which ones might apply ;) you could possibly get the charge written off if you act fast enough with the credit card company. Once the credit card company irrevocably pays the online gambling place, you owe the credit card company (on a legal debt) and then your out of luck.

4) The result is that the gaming site will blacklist you/your credit card... which solves another problem 'cause next time cc is down you won't be so tempted to go online gaming 8-) They could report you to a credit agency (meaning it'd be harder to get credit, etc. for some time), and they could sell the debt to a collector who tries to intimidate you into paying , but the bottom line is you have a pretty good defense that its an illegal contract.

Now, if you read my post about mortgage foreclosures, I have to say that while I don't like the idea of walking away from a debt, when people are walking away from legitimate home loans that, at the end of the day, were funded by a lot of pension fund investors, 401(k) held funds, etc. etc.... my conscience is not to bothered by people telling illegal gambling sites to pound sand. Obviously, this doesn't work in Vegas, Indian reservation casinos, horse/dog track, riverboats, truck stops, or anywhere gambling is legal... or at poker night at my house unless you want to leave with a black eye... so don't get any bad ideas!

Cheers
GD
