You can only cash in cards mid-turn if you have 5 or more.

If you have 1 card and then eliminate a player with 2 cards, even if you have a set you can't cash in until next turn. If you have 1 card and eliminate a player with 4 cards...then that puts you at 5 and you can cash in right away.

"mid-turn" means, after you kill someone. ie not at the beginning of your turn.
