1v1 is always a lot luck. I can't really take credit for perfect dice, though I would certainly like to! : )
But to get back to the origonal question, newbies always deadbeat more, largely because many are just popping in for a "try" ... and decide not to continue for whatever reason.
I don't think there is a campaign. I think you just got poor luck to have a bunch of deadbeat newbies in your games. It might be that the percentage of players who are newbies is higher and therefore there seem to be higher numbers of newbies because overall game playing is down in the summer, and likely also more a higher percentage of "regular" players playing private games (the first has been stated by Lack, the second is my guess .. if you know you are leaving, you are more likely to play a couple games with friends who you know will finish them quickly).
