Afraid to voice grief

Postby Lukeplastow on Sat Aug 09, 2008 6:24 am

I have found with the rating system that I no longer want to explain any griefs I have with other players.

For instance in one game I was slightly bigger than the other 3, and as if on cue they all turned on me and wiped me out. I then voiced my grief that they took 28 terrs in one turn. And left it at that.

Subsequently I have now gone from a 4.8 to a 4.7 with 2 of the 3 players rating me and rating me very poorly. All I asked was why pick on me?

I think the ratings system is great but it is stopping me from wanting to chat to other players.

Hrm. Interesting notion...I wonder if other people feel like that ?

I find with the new rating system that I just don't care what the ratings are. I don't even look anymore. Maybe that was what was intended ? I've got jokers giving me a 1 in team play when they played for the team I beat...I've got a couple of "played too slowly" tags in casual, sequential games from idiots that got crushed.

I guess what it comes down to is that the ratings seem fairly meaningless now. I'm sure that's been said time and time again in the ratings thread(s). Before, if I saw negatives, I'd look and then make a decision if I wanted to play someone. Usually, one or two negs meant nothing...it's when you saw a pattern. But the choices were good/bad/neutral. Now, because of the averaging and such, it's hard to tell at a glance what I should explore more deeply.

*shrug*

I endeavor to not care about ratings. I'd like to think that the people that I play understand that I play for fun and with honor. Or at least as much honor as one can have when sitting in front of a laptop screen. :) I do understand the problems with feedback moderation from before, but the new system doesn't do anything to really make things better - there are still ratings that are wrong and (to me) worse that you really can't get a sense of the jackasses very easily because people rate differently.

Mayor Jim will fix it! :)

I was more afraid to voice grief with the old system because feedback actually meant something. Yeah when I say something now I get rated down from time to time but with so many ratings it doesn't matter and I'm still at a 4.9 anyway.

Keep in mind that any rating over 4.0 is well above average. ;)

if we were in the old ratings system, they would have left neg feedback, and you would be complaining that it needs to be fixed. the problem isnt the system. the problem is that there will always be goobers that dont rate folks fairly.

The ratings are more inconsequencial than ever, with deadbeat jerks harder to spot than before,
but your average is still above average and is likely to improve again in time. The feedback you
received was kind of crappy, but hey... it could have been worse.

best thing about ratings system: when some idiot gives who i annihilated gives me less than 5 stars for no good reason, i have a new mission in life--to find an open game with them and give them the worst possible rating and comments. it's just like medals but with a twisted, bitter edge that really gets me off. it's especially great when a freemium does it--with the 4 game limit, they rarely have open games, so when i finally find one it's like nirvana....well except that it's not a buddhist heavenly experience of peace but just one more petty, pitiful competitive moment of BS that gets a hateful, grumpy old man thru his day.....good lord i have issues.....

but i guess i'm good to have on one's side in a clan battle 8-)

That's all ratings really are though: retribution.

They're either positive or negative.

All that really matters is whether or not the player is going to deadbeat. If they're not a good player, or don't make the game fun, just don't play with them again.

People seem intent on comparing one another constantly, and thus wanting the best of whatever measurement is available.

I can't be bothered to care. Mostly because none of this actually matters, once the computer's off. I hope people don't rate me badly, but it's not the end of the world if someone does.

ive had a few folks that have rated me with 1's for no reason. but now ive had enough people rate me to where my overall rating is still 4.9, thats why this system is better, because a few idiots cant ruin your feedback. and ive seen people with some pretty low ratings, ive noticed that if someone is below 3 or 4, then they should be watched carefully, lol.

We can start a club, it was like reading my own mind!

The ratings system itself is meaningless. It's only the unintended frankenstein side-effects that give it meaning. When trawling through feedbacks and I find someone who's left a lot of low feedbacks, I add them to my foe list so I never have to play them.

But I don't care about my rating... it's just a sick perverted way of expelling inner anger that I hunt down the people who give me low ratings and give them low ratings back.

Heh heh! Ratings are funny.

I have been saved a lot of time with the new system as have all of the moderators...

In a perfect world it would be more accurate, but its not perfect, and the stars are the only thing that work.. the fact that they dont mean much, is irrelevant.. and if you know what to look for, you actually can size a player up to some degree, sometimes.

i agree whole heartedly. i have given only 1 ratings out, that's it and no one else will get one either. at least with the feedback you knew why you got it and have a laugh with it.

I've started to hand out 1-1-1 ratings to all players which I don't feel like handing out a 5-5-5 to. Nothing in between. Then, when the games are archived, I check whether any of those 1-1-1 guys have given me a unjustified shitty rating. If they have, I let my 1-1-1 stand. If not, I remove the rating. That way I don't have to chase open slots. It's a way to ensure instant retribution.
