It is positively INSANE that there are no directives anywhere as to how to actually play some of the more detailed boards.

How do you bombard?

The Instructions wrote:Some maps allow a special type of attack called bombardment which converts the opposing territory to neutral once the opponent's forces are destroyed.

It's just like a normal attack, you select the bombard-able territory from the dropdown menu.

You bombard the same way as you attack. The only difference is that you cannot conquer the territory. If there is another player on the territory, when they die, the territory will have one neutral army, if there are neutrals on the territory, the count will remain at one. If you remove another player from a territory then you will "annihilate" that territory and get a card. If you attack a neutral army through bombardment, you have to win 2-0 when they have 2 armies remaining or win 1-0 when they have one army remaining. This will make no visible change in the board or army counts, but will appear in the game log. You get a card for this as well.

I read this over three times and it didn't make sense at first. Then I realized ... 1) you bombard by rolling against any territory (think of them as "non-adjacent" territories the same way you roll against an adjacent / bordering territory. However, when you would otherwise eliminated the units on an adjacent territory and "advance" your own units into the target territory (i.e., the situations the quote describes), the result of the bombardment will be, instead, that you "annihilated" the territory, meaning it will go to 1 neutral. You can keep bombing annihilating the territory, whether it is held by an opponent, a neutral (including after annihilating it already - a good way to get an easy card sometimes), or even yourself (clearly a mistake, but the game will let you bomb yourself).

Read the maps carefully. If it uses the word "attack" and not "bombard", then even if the territories look like they don't border each other, the result of rolling them down to zero will be advancing 1 or more of your own troops. A good example is D-Day. On the other hand, if its says "bombard", then your own troops will not advance. See the Duck-and-cover Map.

Okay, well thanks for the replies, guys...I guess it is just confusing that it looks like a regular attack until you actually "annihilate" the territory, at which point it registers as bombardment in the log? Otherwise there is no way to tell?

The territories are not connected. Bombarding is like using artillery. You attack something that is not close. That is the best way to tell.

Don't all maps with bombardment have it listed somewhere on the board?

They should do, although the wording isn't necessarily consistent...
