A question about civility

Postby edsdad on Sat Aug 16, 2008 2:15 pm

How many members think that asking an opponent that you've played many times before, how they are doing at the beginning of a game is a faux pas.I've played over 1200 games(please don't look at my rank,it's depressing),asked a lot how they were, have been asked many times how I was, never been an issue until now.Have some of us become so jaded that we can't be civil to each other in game chat without getting paranoid.Opinions please

If you sort of know them, sure, otherwise it's... weird? idk. I don't see a big problem with it, although if someone I don't even remember playing asked me how I was in chat at the start of a game I might reply with something ironical.

Not a problem - why would it be?

not a lot different to wishing everyone good luck.

I often look and see where players are from, and will make some comment such as "Good international mix", or "I seem to be on the other side of the world to everyne else", or " we all seeem to be in the US this time"

Never occurred to me someone would take offense to friendly greeting.

And just because you've not played someone before doesn't mean you have no idea who they are - especially if they're regular posters.

Sucks to em if they do take offense.

But that's not asking how they're doing, is it? As in inquiring after their health or whatever.

In my opinion, asking how someone is doing is a perfectly reasonable acknoledgement, and other players can chose to respond or not depending on how they feel, but hopefully their response won't be antagonistic or mean... you don't have to take offense to people who don't reply, just finish the game, and kick their a**!---C

Idk if you're refering to a specific game, but did you address a specific player, or just give a general comment like "Hey all, how's everything going?"? People might get a bit suspicious if you pick just one player and address them... but I'm not really sure, I would just recommend that you address everyone as a whole when asking how they're doing...---C

Well, provided of course that you ain't (and you'd be pretty silly to team and then flag it up), I think the phrase "get a life, I was just saying 'hi' " would be appropriate.
