A little appreciation

Postby stavros.maginty on Wed Oct 22, 2008 7:27 pm

I was bored the other night and ended up on the forums in here and was surprised with the intense debates raging around the recent changes to the dice and classic map etc. I don't want to enter the debate as I feel it doesn't personally affect me in the way it appears to have some people - I never played the classic map anyway, and the language/dice changes are really just cosmetic as far as I'm concerned - but I did want to say that I think sometimes people are so busy holding up a yardstick of how things "should" be that they fail to see how great what they have actually is.

I found conquer club by chance after a frustrating evening playing the free risk version on yahoo and pretty much signed up sight unseen. Pound for pound I think it has to be the best value I've received from a game with the possible exception of some of the Zelda titles or maybe Age of Empires. I didn't come here with any expectations beyond wanting to play risk online, and have been blown away with the variety of maps and gameplay. I realise that different people have different expectations (and given that I had next to none, I was always going to be easy to please) and that people have different levels of involvement in the site, from the more hardcore players to the volunteers who police the forums etc. but for 6 months now I have been very merrily playing away and I am sure will continue to do so for the next 6 months. For $25 or whatever I paid that seems like very good value to me.

I realise that the community is what is important for some people, and as such this could be interpreted as an arrogant post, but it isn't intended that way. I don't want to overstep my boundaries and pretend to understand, or even that I am interested in, the politics that exist. Again, that isn't about arrogance, it's just not why I come here. I just want to say that I am thankful for what I have found in this site, imperfections and all, and that as far as I am concerned, the glass is half full. If I ever get to really hate changes THAT much, then I will take some time out from the game and possibly return a few months later.

Anyway, I just thought what a thankless task it must be dealing with at all sometimes. No matter what the site does owner someone is gonna be pissed at him. So, I say thanks. The site is great, I have enjoyed the game enormously. Here's hoping you don't have to take it down because of Hasbro.

you are quite right mate and things are a hell of a lot calmer than they could've been, trust me .. heh this is CC being philosophical about losing its beloved map ; )
You should've seen it when we had superficial changes and we thought it could be changed back.. nasty businness!

In this case everyone knows deep-down that this is an inevitable change. We are on a snidey (counterfeit) site after-all.

What you do need to add to your repertoire of understanding, is empathy; for many people, who grew up playing classic, it is the game! And taking that specific board away is akin to joining a Chess Club and then having your pieces nicked whilst being told that you can only play draughts. (checkers to some of you i should imagine)

We'll get over it, everyone will still love the site but people feel how they feel. Stupid though it may seem, stupid though it certainly is, people care about something as banal as a specific graphic on their favourite, frivolous pastime.
