Bad drop strategies?

Postby jrbedwell on Fri Dec 12, 2008 11:07 am

G'day all -

Curious what sort of strategies you use when you get a bad drop? I've had a run of them the past week or two. I generally wait for someone to leave a single army somewhere and then deploy there and attack that with my 6. I'm still debating whether it's better to turn that into 3 and 3 or just advance my 5 (assuming I win the first battle, which is an entirely different can of worms). I've also used the strategy of dropping 3 in Australia or SA if I have a 3 there, and then attacking 3 on 1 somewhere else, but I don't like lowering my odds with the dice. Those things can be evil.

Thoughts?

In 1-1's opponent can get much better drop and yet play first (and yet have a great dice )...

In large singles, however, there is no such a thing as a really bad drop. Of course, opponents can be luckier than you, but if you watch your position, you'll see very nice possibilities. Just keep strengthening your position and exploit every opponent's mistake you can (there is always plenty of them)...

bad drops in classic can be overcome with good map strategy. Many times I've been on the wrong side of controlling AUS or SA early in the game. In cases like this I try to overcome their bonus with the territory bonus and try to never leave any 1's exposed. Also continually fort guys from unexposed areas and create a massive wave of men coming at them. It will work -- sometimes.

It depends on type of game as well. In a no card game the first goal is territory bonus so being spread around is not good. In escalating its the opposite. Bonus is not so important and being spread out over the board is.

The best strat for a bad drop in any style is don't draw attention to yourself, let others do the work for you by letting them kill each other off. You may have a bad drop in a no card game but many times one can build a base of power while others fight over say ausralia or Sa. If the victor is severally wakened one can swoop in.

this is just a general strategy as each game is different. Officers play different then newer people. What officers do will many times be different then what stripes do.
