Name Change

Postby Paulus on Wed Oct 24, 2007 3:23 am

I was just wondering if the idea changing a username had developed any. Has anyone come up with a system for this yet? My original idea was to charge a monetary fee for those wanting to change their username. Are their any other ideas for this?

Suppose all the members on CC were granted the ability to freely change their username without any kind of cost or fee. People would be changing their username left and right and it would cause chaos, confusion, and probably lead to a host of unwanted problems for the moderators to deal with. Placing a fee requirement on those who would wish to change their username would probably work as an effective method for keeping away those who are not serious about changing their name. It would also make people think more before changing their name so that they won't change their mind again. In addition, any money raised through this system could be put towards any future upgrades for the site.

I'm not sure why you would want to change your name, but if they wanted to do it, I would think the best way would be to have your account name, which is static, under which your feedback would reside, as well as for 'ignore' purposes and a 'game name' which would show on games, and on the boards.

That way people could click on your game name to check your account name, should they have any questions, issues, etc.

If clans and such are coming, I guess this could be fun, as you could show your clan affiliation in your name, etc.

Well, I've grown quite tired of my username and I have another one I would really like to replace it with.
Your idea of an account name and a game name sounds good. I could roll with that. Another idea is to have a username history to see what usernames a particular member has had up to the member's current one.
Either idea would make it easy for others to know who a particular member is, or was, so that they could make sense of their ignore list as well as any feedback given or received from those who have changed their username.

but why would anyone pay for changing a username? And this belongs in Suggestions and Bug reports.

This is pretty pointless

Someone would pay to change their username because they've grown weary of their current one and have a new one that they would really like to use instead. Plus, why not pay a small fee of some sort for the service which would go towards improving the site?

But no-one will pay for it. No-one will think that their username sucks and PAY to change it. Plus there's also abuse here.

People pay for all sorts of things all the time that others think are useless. Just because you wouldn't pay for it doesn't mean that no one else would. What harm would it do for the mods to simply offer the option?

Iliad, stop being such a pessimist, find something wrong with the option or shut up, please.

Paulus: sounds like a good idea.

Well, I'm sure it will be moved if it truly is inappropriate for this particular forum.
The amount has yet to be decided either. Besides, having a fee is just an idea. I'm hoping others can present good ideas of their own for dealing with members who wish to change their username. And I'm glad you like your username, lord voldemort. Unfortunately, I no longer like mine.

All I'm saying is that lack has a lot of stuff to do and this could be done but I don't see it being done simply because there are better things for him to do

Lack doesn't have to do it himself. He could simply have one of his moderators do it for him so that he could tend to other matters.

the mods can't do programming. I just doubt WHY this needs to be done.

Why does anything need to be done like to Fog of War, the shop, Live Chat, or even forums? None of these things needed to be done, but they were done anyway to improve the overall enjoyment of the site for its members. I would think that at least one of the mods has programming skills of some sort, and if they don't, I'm sure one or more of the many members on the CC does.

But Fog of War is important this isn't. Would lack spend his time just so some people can change their name? And I haven't even touched on the subject of abuse

Fog of War is not that important and is completely unnecessary, although I do not object to it being there as some here may really enjoy having it there as an option. I also don't see how spending any time time on changing a username, especially if he were collecting on it, would be that much different from him, or any moderator, addressing the hundreds of issues put forth in the Cheating & Abuse forum, or any other issues for that matter. Just as there may be problems of abuse if this option were to be made available, there might also be simple and effective ways of dealing with them. If the whole thing doesn't work and turns out to be a failure, then they could simply do away with it all. I'm simply bringing the issue up for discussion. You know, I find it strange that you continue to post in this thread when you've made it clear that you think this issue is stupid and pointless.

Oh please shut up Iliad.

I for one would encourage name-changing, but then, for a price.. Maybe money, maybe something else..

Though, if you can change it with paying money, then damn I won't be able to do it. :/

But if it just becomes an option where you're allowed to change your name, let's say every 6 months, and you have to be premium, then I would like that also..

Iliads Odd-esse...

Postby Piestar on Wed Oct 24, 2007 5:16 pm

There is no 'need', but then again, there is no need for a lot of things Lack has so kindly done for us, only 'wants'

A lot of people here change their avatars, and on a lot of sites I've been to, people like to change their 'name' to suit their mood.

If there are enough people here who would enjoy this, why be a dik and moan about it? No one is gonna whip you, and call you Toby, so get over it?

Paulus, I would suggest you start a poll on the suggestion board, and see if there is enough interest to warrant the effort. If enough people are interested, and the amount of time to make program the change isn't more then it's worth, it'll probably make it to the todo list, and that's all you can hope for.

Changing of usernames has already been suggested and discussed. Look in the FAQ to see the answer to your question.

Stuff

If you were going to have a cost, how about points? People are always worried about too many points flooding the CC economy, perhaps we need a few ways to reduce the amount.

Skittles, I like your idea of a member having to be premium and the idea of a minimum time period a member must wait after changing their name before they can do so again. Those are two good additions to that could added to the system. I also like Piestar's idea of possibly using points as a way to pay for the name change as supposed to money. Perhaps the member could have the option of using money or points. Thanks for the ideas y'all. I also realize, Optimus, that the "answer" to this username change question is in the FAQ section. I also know that this "answer" has been there for quite some time now, which is why I asked in the first post whether any developments had been made in this area. In fact, I may have been the first to suggest the idea. If not, then I'm mistaken. But I think I was involved in the original discussion of the matter, OP. I'm simply refreshing the issue so it doesn't fall by the wayside and become a forgotten issue. That's all.
