How many games did you play before your first win?

Postby Ditocoaf on Sun Mar 09, 2008 6:19 pm

When I bought a premium membership, I had completed two games, and had four more in the works. I was feeling (hesitantly) confidant about winning one of them, and was chomping at the bit to try a few more. It got to the point where I was running home at lunch to get a freestyle turn in at the right time. So I figured, "hey, I'm really in to this. I should get myself the upgrade," and promptly took $25 from my checking account and joined a few more games.

Shortly afterward, I lost the game I thought I might win, and took 3 other losses in a row. I'm beginning to realize that not everyone's score can go up, considering there's only 1000 points per player, and I'm beginning to doubt that it was worth the money for something like this.

So my question to you, is how long it usually takes to win your first game. I know that the first few games should be expected losses, considering I'm just learning my way around the game, but I don't know at what point my inexperience should be replaced with slowly improving mediocrity. Any advice?

You really do have to consider both luck, your own learning curve, and the players you play against.

I won my third or fourth game, but there is also streaks where I will lose 10 games in a row, others where I win 4-5 in a row.

Once you improve, it is definitely worth the money ^^

Won my second and third games, then lost 2 then won again...

Says the guy with a 53% win rate. :? I think I find some other posts a little more reassuring.

Well, I've just lost my 8th, but I have tentatively high hopes for a couple others. :|

Same. I won a pretty sweet one. Freestyle Speed game on Classic. I was a Cook at the time, and gained 300+ points off of the Colonel and such.

i was joking obviously.

my first game that ended was a win. my first game that started was a loss. so depending on what you consider first game it was either a win or a loss.

btw after the first few games i was down to 812 points. then started climibing and stabilized to ~1200 points. then i got premium and started playing more games and shot up to 2200 points and never looked back. hit a plateau at ~2200-2400 then after refining my style i made it to 2800. now i've quit playing CC and haven't joined anything for a long time.

but i'll be back soon.

PS: for the record win percentage and points are totally meaningless in a scoring system where abusers thrive while all round players sit in the middle of the scoreboard. so don't play for points. play for fun

i won my first.
but that was classic with all the same rules as traditional risk, so i had a fair idea of what i was doing.
since then ive learnt that its about being comfortable and knowing how to play the map, knowing how people will react....
and sometimes it works and i have massive winning streaks...othertimes...ive dropped significantly.
it truely can be a slow learning curve
my suggestion is seek out a player with alot of experience to take u under their wing, if u keep on losing they can give you tips into what youre doing wrong :)
or hell just keep playing and pay alot of attention to how other people play.
work out whats keeping you from winning.
read your feedback and adapt.
:P
dont give up. and someday you may have a pip like mine or...
better.

I think my third was my first win, I had a few in the very begging and it really got me into it quick. Then the humbling began. he he. Find what style of strategy you like and are good at. Every game style has a different strategy from number of players to Flat rate, speed freestyle. There is some you will get into more that others. I just finally found what I think I am good at and really enjoy. Till I decide I don't like it as much and change again I guess. There are so many options, just kick back, join a variety, watch some speed games by good players for strategy ideas and enjoy.

Didn't someone win their first fifty or so games?

Yes, you have 2073 points right now. I think you started with 10,000 points.

On topic: I won my first and have never been below 1000 points. Been on a losing slide currently.

I won my first four games. Then I've been eliminated in one. However, before it ended, I won two more.
So I had (real) 4/4 record and (false) 6/6 record...

I won my first two cc games, a classic and an africa map. Prior to that I

had never won a real life match of a popular world domination board

game, still haven't. Since joining though I've settled into an average pace

with some wins, some close losses and some total defeats. The important

thing is to learn a little each game, win or lose, and find players that you

enjoy playing with and maps you enjoy playing on. Keep at it!

play 6 player escalating and watch what the higher ranked players do. you don't need a continent, just a nice spread of your armies.

I won my first two games but then lost my next 6 before settling into a groove. For me, that groove happened to be doubles. I play most of my doubles game with the same partner but found that I had good results with others as well.

Interestingly enough, contrary to the popular belief that doubles are the fast track to a high ranking, I never made it out of the mid to high teens when I was playing mostly doubles and my jump into the 2000s has been due to playing more singles games.

None the less, my advice to you is to take your lumps and figure out that you're playing against a bunch of guys who take this game seriously enough that (unless you played the board game a ton, I mean really played it a ton) you're in a whole new ball game now. Pretty much forget what used to work against your little brother 15 years ago.

It's insanely fun and worth every penny of the subscription. Just watch and learn. One way, BTW, is to play doubles with a strong player. Let them call all the shots and you'll figure a bunch out.

Read the advice forum as well. Plenty of goodies to glean there.

won my 4th and 5th games then bounced all over the place after that. so yes get used to the yo-yo effect and remember it is much more fun just to play than it is to worry about points.
