Freestyle Strategy... is this cheap?

Postby Theguyoverthere on Sun May 04, 2008 12:34 am

Alright, so I've been winning a lot of freestyle games, and I think I know why. It's because I wait until everyone else has done stuff, then deploy, take a continent (even if I can't hold it, because all I have to do is hit begin turn and I get the armies regardless!) and end my turn.

Is this cheap? I never thought so, but then someone gave me my very first negative feedback claiming that I stalled the game and played cheaply basically. (it was a speed game, so I couldn't have stalled that badly!)

Now I'm not here to whine about the neg, I don't really care, I was just curious... Isn't that the basic strategy of speed freestyle games? Wait until the last moment possible and sneak continents?

just fill in an e-ticket and you should get that neg removed.

and your strategy sounds fine to me.

It's one of the few freestyle strategies you can use easily and well. I'd call it fair to use, if they don't like it, tell them to not play freestyle :P

its not cheap and the feedback can be removed because you have 5 mins to make a move or forfeit your turn. you can not leave feedback because of options of the game set up. it doesnt matter if you move in the first minute or the last minute of the round if you even care to move at all.

its called abusing the clock, you can leave negs for abusing game mechanics

that is incorrect. you can not abuse the clock. CC rules indicate you have 5 mins to move or lose a turn. Using all 5 mins of the clock is smart a tactic and not just rushing your turn because you are afraid the other player will leave a negative because you used the full clock. if the other player wants to rush his turn and deploy and attack and end turn in the first 15 seconds, good for him. Not a smart move, but most likely he has a low rank and doesnt understand how to play freestyle. In that case, he should not play freestyle and stop leaving negatives about it.

Of course it's cheap, but it's also a legit tactic and the other players should be expecting it.

No... not cheap or worth a neg.
It's a tactic and nothing more and giving a neg for getting used in a game is lame. The guy needs to learn how to play or at least figure out how to counter such moves. Abusing the clock? Ha ha ha . . . there is no such thing. I recommend reading CC for Dummies Herakilla for a better understanding of "game mechanics" and freestylin' stragedy.

I agree 100% with this. Freestlyers know to use all 5 mins up most of the time.

What he said.

Cheap like going last, taking a bonus area, and then waiting around your computer hitting refresh over and over to start your turn the nanosecond someone starts their turn in a 24-hour game so you get your bonus.

Completely legal but annoying and lame and precisely why I don't play freestyle. The winner should not be the guy who's prepared to never leave his computer, the winner should be the guy who makes the best moves.

None the less, that's what you get for playing freestyle.

Ironic, of course, that two people who see absolutely nothing unsavory with this have called me a "cheater" for logging in as my doubles partner to sign him up for a public doubles game with me rather than waiting around until we both happened to be at the computer so we could sign up ourselves.

One is a technically "legal" but rather cheap tactic that specifically gains advantage of your opponents in a game. One gains no advantage over anyone but has been deemed "cheating" because a couple of control freaks stomped their feet loudly enough.

lol guys:

Hi Theguyoverthere,

First, I am giving you 24 hours to change your feedback for him as it is deemed retaliatory for this comment:

"If you win, he will give you a negative feedback."

Remove that comment or edit it, or your whole feedback will be removed.

Feedbacks can be edited by clicking at the My Feedback link located on the left sidebar then click on the Feedback Left.

As for his feedback, it is valid since he is stating the way you play freestyle games. I am not going to side on who is right or who is wrong here. I am just making sure that feedbacks are within the feedback guidelines.

Evidentally I can't get it removed. Huh? Did the ticket person even read the game chat? The guy that gave me the feedback was being a total meany! I don't think I did anything wrong... :( Do I deserve this? All I did was play a game using a strategy that I have seen many others use (8 player freestyle escalating, anyone?)

it's not cheap, it's how you're supposed to play freestyle. the rules of freestyle facilitate specific timing usage and anyone who complains should not play freestyle

Then how come the feedback wno't be removed if his comment was untrue? (as in my play was cheap, which it wasn't...) I don't get it... the response I got was that it wouldn't be removed... i sent a reply so maybe they'll change their mind after reading this thread..

OK I got a reply... but it still says him complaining about me being last every round is a valid complaint, even though that's the basic strategy in freestyle games! I don't see why I should get negged just because I guy was sad that he lost to lower ranks because of a strategy I used... :o

This is one I don't think is cheap... and I have a high standard. I try to do it too, but it doesnt' work so well in 1v1... and I usually get burned on the lag. It kills me!

Anywho, here's a thread you might be interested in to a poll I did on freestyle tactics.

I don't see anything wrong with bending the rules in that way, except that some people are unable to have the same amount of devotion to the game, which is why the internet is such a good medium for Risk. Say I have to go to work and have a busy day at the office, and therefore can't respond late enough to take advantage of the clock in that way? Additionally, it's a headache for the other players who have tight schedules, because they might plan to take a turn during their lunch break only to find that someone is holding out 23 hours and 59 minutes to take their turn so they can have the Asia bonus. It holds up the game unnecessarily, and a negative score based on attendance should be expected.

That being said, if everyone is contributing at or close to the same time, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to time your actions, as that's the bonus of freestyle. As long as to get that perfect move you aren't delaying the game or forcing other people to give up their lives to beat you, there's no reason to leave a negative comment.

i think freestyle is for cheap players with cheap tactics. It promotes poor sportsmanship. All kinds of abuse stem from freestyling and that cannot be denied

Exactly. Which is why I don't think anyone should complain about any of them. You want to play that crap format, go ahead, just understand that pretty much anything goes.

I'm actually amazed at the fact that anyone even bothers to differentiate sleazy play from good play in freestyle because almost none of it is in the spirit of good competition and nearly all of it is some BS manner to get away with something.
