it seems everything is farming. It may be easier to explain what is not farming.

the only thing I can think of that may make everyone agree is if every player only plays the number 1 ranked player. than its not farming.

Okay, how do you get in those games?

1. Private games... so we are not supposed to be in any public games anymore?
2. Play team games with people you do not know... so, no more friends at cc, okay
3. Foe everyone on the scoreboard... I once foed all cooks (and a few cadets, then unfoed them), it does not take that long... but really?
4. Join games last to make sure there are only high ranked players... Who starts the games, then?
5. Never start any games because a cook might decide to join... okay, looks like cc died, no one is playing
6. Get your rank down... woo hoo?

Okay, so tell me, is there any easy way for a colonel (or whatever) to avoid farming?
My answer is "no." I do not mind farming of most sorts, other than the types where there is no way for a person who is not a low rank to join. If I get back up to major, then start a game, and all cadets join, I see no problem with that, it may be farming, but it was their choice to join, and any high ranked person could have done so just as easily.

I was unaware that either "points" or "medals" were viable crops. Especially this time of year...

Okay, 2 people now.

Add MOBAJOBG and you have 3. There might be a few more that do this, but it is such a small portion of the high ranks, that it is not exactly common, or even unusual, it is pretty rare.

but the high ranked player doesnt force the players to play them - plus they risk a lot of points against lower ranks for the amount they gain

no,playing speed freestyle tricks on noobs is what i frown on. I have lots of public games open to most people .And lots of tournament games going that most high ranks are too scared to play because of potential point loss. not me nosiirreebob.

freestyle tricks wasn't mentioned in this thread. the topic was about why people think farming for points is so bad, while farming for medals seem to be ok. same kind of farming but it's just different reason.

I'm still trying to figure out when the definition of farming expanded to include anything that involves winning. Seriously. Last time I checked, farming was deliberately structuring games so that you only play newbies. So joining a team game against a newbie team with a full experienced team is farming. Opening a hell of a lot of team games with your experienced team isn't... because anyone can join. Opening a lot of 8-player freestyle speed games isn't farming, because anyone can join. But dropping the game if anyone ranked higher than sergeant joins is farming, because then you're structuring the game so you never play anyone highly ranked.

On-topic... because while medals are interesting, there's no scoreboard for medals.

Ah, the fluidity of language. Given enough time and obfuscation, you can make words mean anything you like!

On-topic... give it time, I'm sure it will eventually.

Eh... I doubt it. It's too easy to get maxed. Everyone would be trying to organize tourneys. Not that a few people haven't already tried to make their own little scoreboard threads...

Simple answer:

Taking newbies out of the ethical equation because all farming of newbies is bad for the club (it discourages new members from staying...most farmed newbs just don't come back):

Farming for points get you something which is directly to the detriment of other players - you either take points from others, or you are pushing other players who are more skilled than you down the score board and artificially inflating points at the top. In other words, point farming leads to harm to everyone on the score board.

Farming for medals affects only those you play (and I'm going to guess they are newbies because otherwise you are just legitimately winning games and therefore, good on you!) because medals are a personal achievement and not used to directly rate you against another player. Farming for medals only harms those you directly screw over in games.

So, farming for medals is less bad from a purely ethical standpoint because it harms fewer people (yes, I have my utilitarian moments)
However, farming newbs for ANY reason is ethically dubious at best and should be discouraged...

interesting... because i always thought that when someone went after a medal, even if they were going after newbs, the intended victim has/had more of a shot, because the veteran is out of their comfort zone and trying something new. anyway, nice post...-0

Right, when you farm for medals you might actually be "reverse" farming, which on this site is known as point dumping. It is good for whomever is playing with you, except that it could, possibly, lead to some inflation. The point system here does not take into account randomness and assumes everyone is always playing at their best. When you go for medals in game types you are less skilled at, the point system still assumes you are playing at the top of your game.

However, since we consider our score across all types of games, this is minimal.

And if I can add one more caveat to Twill's post, it is that there is also a difference in that farming noobs for points generally involves not only screwing them over, inflating your points, etc, but generally is done in a predatory way. Inviting to games, dropping then re-joining, etc.

Farming medals just means playing a lot of games, and beating whomever plays too. Farming for points is actively looking to exploit others, farming medals you are generally just playing games.

Which leads to a whole other dicussion on how much of a responsibility someone has to protect themselves from being farmed. Farm me once, shame on you, Farm me twice, shame on me, etc.

Taking newbies out of the ethical equation because all farming of newbies is bad for the club (it discourages new members from staying...most farmed newbs just don't come back):

I got farmed in a couple freestyle games and then a Waterloo epic loss when I first started. I left the site, then came back to close my account, when I bumped into Wacicha, who taught me how to play (at least hold my own). Now I pump my own dollars into CC.
