with all due respect you're way off base here.

It might take longer but the amount of work isn't even close.

From research, to draft after draft after draft, and XML.

If you compare that to a tournament where you have to design it and get players then just upkeep it as it goes, it's not even close.

Even if a tournament takes a long time it's not like you're doing tons of work for it. Everyone else is playing the games. All you have to do is make the games, send out PMs (much MUCH easier now with mass pms), and upkeep (yes upkeep is more than just word. you make sure people join their games and send out reminders. if you're organized, tournament points and who goes on is quite easy. overall it's just tedious but the tools of the site help greatly).

With a map you have to implement changes, defend those changes, explain why comments from other people don't work or won't be implemented. after all of that, the XML can be quite difficult too.

Which all serves to prove my point that you clearly have never run a tournament, edbeard. :) I know you guys have a different kind of work, but I spend upwards of 20+ hours on tournament PMs, updates, tracking games, resolving disputes between players, etc. in a week. I think if I put in that much work, I can easily consider myself as having done just as much work as the mapmakers have.

Tell you what, you go organize 8 tournaments and run them simultaneously and then come back and tell me how much "upkeep" it really is.

yea but how many tournaments are you running? Definitely you have put in TONS of work for tournaments. But, you're running so many of them. I would agree you've easily put in more work than us map makers.

Running 8 of them simultaneously would be very difficult but I'm talking about 1 tournament medal vs 1 map medal

a tournament could be as little as 16 players and 5 games. this won't take that much work. If you compare this with the minimum work for a map it's not even close.

I disagree that 1 tournament vs. 1 map is a definite win on the map side. Have you seen some of the tournament we run? Some of them deal with literally hundreds of players. Sure, a small tournament might be less work than a map, but I think that there are PLENTY that are on an equal footing.

However, to be honest, the bigger point here is that the PLAYERS are about to get pwned by the ORGANIZERS and MAPMAKERS. :D

That they are, optimus.

I think the number of tournament medals given out vs the number of map medals given out will be very telling though.

oh well . we'll just disagree. And, now I'm off to see if you have any new tourneys up haha.

But everyone should also realize that there are a lot of players, including myself, who have spent so much time and money on this site BECAUSE OF tournaments. If there weren't tournaments, there would be fewer people on the site. Besides, they're a great way for the players to get the other medals as well.

But least it is a friendly disagreement. :)

No new ones for me today, probably about the end of the month though. Trying to finish a few off. Got to pad that medal lead after all.

Suppose though that tournaments were scaled like other medals are, based on (unique) participants. It's much easier to run a simple tournament for under 20 people than it is to make a map (it's comparable to posting 20 games in callouts, and I know, cause I did it :D), and is clearly easier than a 30 player, 162 game (per player) MLB season. At the same time, giving one medal for each tournament promotes short, simple tournaments.

It wouldn't be hard to use the same function that searches games for unique participants to search for tournament games, all you need in a list associating each tourney to the organizer.

Or why not forget about counting the contribution medals, and just leave the number on there. That way there's no comparisons made between map making and tournament organizing (apples to oranges), but everyone can still see how much a person has contributed (whether it's 13 maps or 27 tournaments) as long as they can read Roman numerals

I thought it was a long-established fact that tourney organizers, mapmakers (and flamers) can't play well. :P

Why can't you refuse medals? I'm going to not win any games in protest until we get that option :geek:
