I also received three stars for attitude in which no one said a word the whole game. If you miss no turns your attendance rating should be 5! If you never say anything how can you have "an attitude?" Ridiculous.

Rating Attributes

Fair Play: covers suiciding, secret alliance suspicion, breaking or respecting alliances, chivalry, etc...
Attendance: covers deadbeating, missing turns, deliberately prolonging rounds, finding a babysitter to keep things moving, etc...
Attitude: covers behaviour in chat, foul language, sore losers, gracious winners, "great chatters!", whining about dice, etc...
Teamwork: covers playing with teammates - coordination, communication, etc...

The number of stars given should be based on this scale: 1 = Bad, 2 = Below Average, 3 = Average, 4 = Above Average, 5 = Excellent.
so since nothing was said and no turns were missed you feel both these areas were above average or excellent? Sounds like an ordinary average game to me.

I think the stars should work like this. 1 = Bad, 2 = Below Average, 3 = Average, 4 = Good, 5 = Very Good :D especially 5. coz EXCELLENT is going a bit far me thinks... :P

correction... Feb 17, 2007 was the last action.

But that was still over a year before you launched this account.

Couple of questions for you:
1) What account name did you use during that year gap?
2) Are there any more accounts that you played under?
3) Why did you feel you needed to start a new account?
4) Do you realize you could have continued to use the old account?
5) Did you know what you did was a violation of the only iron-clad rule on this site?

Oh ok then fair enough lol didnt know how to accurately check my activity I just looked at the last game I played. Answers.

1) I WASNT PLAYING DURING THE GAP YEAR.
2) NO, THERE ARE NO OTHER ACCOUNTS I PLAYED UNDER.
3) BECAUSE I WASNT HAPPY WITH THE NAME djjcuk (THAT WAS A YEAR AGO) I NOW AM KNOWN TO ALL MY FRIENDS AS JOSHY BOY.
4) YES I DOBUT I THOUGH IT BEST NOT TO TOUCH IT.
5) I DID NOT THINK I WAS VIOLATING THE RULES AS I HAVE ONLY ONE ACTIVE ACCOUNT.

As I have said I am willing to let my djjcuk account be deleted by CC. I can assure you that I only have 1 active account. Dont know how to prove this but I'm sure that if you go through all my games on this account you will see that there is NO CHEATING on my part.

Anything else? :P
A bit odd you had only 10 games under that alias yet you believe that significantly improves your standing as far as knowledge here. Even odder and more ironic is 8 of those were against kaysguber who appears to also no longer be active. Odder is 3 of them were with 2 other now inactive Josh's. A lot of circumstantial but highly suspicious details here and the only connection is self incrimination. Really curious all of that falling together like that but I am not a multi hunter so I do not know maybe it is all just coincidence...

Ratings - What's Really Wrong With Them.

Postby Hound on Thu Jun 19, 2008 9:33 am

After living with the new rating system for a bit it seems even more useless than first imagined. Among the many problems is a rather significant one, i.e. that we are taking all of the ratings and jamming them together, leaving us with numbers that mean nothing.

For instance, say Player A has been rated by 7 other players and gets a 5 from them all in Attitude and Fair Play, but misses a lot of turns and gets 1's there (I know, no one that misses that many turns will get 5's in the other categories, but bear with me.) Player A's rating would be 3.7.

Player B on the other hand happens to play opponents that generally give out 3's and does nothing (in the rater's view) to warrant more than a 3. Player B will have a 3.0 rating. Which player would you rather play and why? It's clear that you won't be able to tell from the ratings!

Given that the ratings are subjective, based on the rater's opinion, and that no two players will rate the same way, I don't see how this new rating system will ever evolve into anything useful.

To summarize the issues:
1. No written feedback
2. Completely subjective (not as much of a problem under the binary system we had before)
3. No consistency in ratings between players
4. Numbers will become more meaningless over time as everyone clusters around the standard deviation
5. Newbies will be more likely to rate "incorrectly" leading to more complaints about newbies (besides the usual deadbeat problem)
6. Perverse incentive to rate other players just to get a medal (leading to lots of 5's across the board, even for deadbeats)
7. No way to correct ratings if you make a mistake, withdrawal is the only option.

Anybody else have any issues to add?

I started a suggestion thread with a poll in the Suggestion and Bugs forum. I am not sure it will change anything, but I think coming up with positive suggestions is more helpful than just complaining.

I like the new system its well thought out and implemented like a grading system. Even down to having to play a makeup game to get a new rating it all makes sense to me. Only problem is the subjectivity and whimsical nature of how stars are given and what they mean when received. I mean it is clear lack and the rest of the archetypes built in a base guideline and have even sought to flesh it out in instructions but people still apply it however they feel with a lot of people feeling receiving less then 5 is because you did something wrong and not because it was just a normal ordinary average not special game.

I think the new rating system has good potential. Getting everyone to vote on the same guidelines will be near if not at all possible.

I was thinking that maybe CC just needs a more simple system. Like the choice between good or bad for a rating, with a reason being required for the bad option. There could be a color coded symbol/color next to the players name that reflects the ratio of good to bad, like one symbol/color for every 10% or something. Maybe even a smiley/sad face, I dunno. Just an idea I had to get out of my system.

I just think that people should give true ratings. It seems like too many people just do 5 stars or something. I liked the comments system better, but that's just me.

I'm not a big fan of this new system. Like many have said it is subjective and is lacking consistency. With the feedback system, it was easier to interpret than this new one.

Re: worthless ratings!!!

Postby tom913 on Thu Jun 19, 2008 10:12 pm

These ratings are crap---I got a 1-1-1 in a game in which I never missed a turn, didn't make a single comment in chat, and played well (in my opinion) but had no chance of winning because it was a three player game & by the time I got to my turn I was already weak and the leader was already well fortified. Every other game I received a 5-5-5. Guess we are supposed to give a 1-1-1 to opponents whenever we lose a game & are pissed off....

I received 2 out of 5 for teamwork, and 3 out of 5 for attendance from one player. I cannot fathom why.

For the record, this was the first time I received anything less than 5 stars.

Do I care? Not really.
Will he get a pm asking him why? Nope.
Does this system engender good governance? Definitely not.
Does my rating tell anyone who wants to play me anything about the way I play? Not really.
Did the old feedback system give more information than the star system? Yes.
Is this sytem easier for those that own and run this site? Yes.

I am now of the opinion the last point is actually the real reason this whole system was brought in. Not for the benefit of the paying customers or even non paying members, but to ease the burden on the staff.

A good idea then? Depends on whether you are squeezing more profit from a business in the short term. As a business owner, I fully understand the reasons behind gaining higher margins from the same resource. As a business owner, I am unsure as to my reaction to a lessening of service whilst keeping the cost to the customer at the same level.

What then, do I care about? Service to the paying customer.

Well, it's considered best practice to fully understand the problem before you start throwing "solutions" at it. That was the intent of my original post, to identify what we thought was wrong with the rating system overall. Of course once the threads got merged it just became another in a long line of bitches about the ratings system, so I guess the mods think they already know what's wrong and just don't care.
