Ah, that old chestnut. That's perhaps the most flagrantly untrue myth we have around here, for about a half-dozen compelling reasons.

Compared to flat rate, no cards put the emphasis on the luck of the dice only, instead of the dice and the cards.

not true... so not true... perhaps if you are an impatient player without the ability to plan traps, counters, effective kills, and know when to take risks, you may think it is about the luck of the dice. but i rarely allow myself to get put into situations where a turn is going to be dependent solely upon the dice. HOWEVER, out of all the cards games i have played, i do enjoy flat rate, the best. and when i do play a card game, it is flat rate.-0

'no cards' is the best option in on line Risk. Its the purest you can get to reducing the luck of cards and having to rely more on strategy. And ya single no cards can be brutal, jyst finished a 5 month 200 round game - I don't reccomend singles but the pure team work that can happen with good players and no cards is great to be a part of . . . . when it works lol.

I agree with Owen. But, only in regards to team games. No cards definitely force the cooperative aspect and to be good at no card team games takes the most strategy of the options. However, playing larger standard games (6-8 players), there is an awful lot of strategy involved in both no cards and escalating. Flat rate too, but to a far lesser extent. The difference between no cards and esc, is in the time frame. Long-term strategies are obviously used in no cards, whereas in esc, it's all about setting yourself (and others) up for that one big push to take the game. A small mistake in a long no card game, is pretty insignificant, but if you make one little mistake in an end-run of an escalating game, you won't get another turn to rebound from it. So, if you're the kind of player who wants to have a chance to fix your mistakes, play without cards. If you want a "no guts, no glory" kind of game, esc is for you. And, I guess if you're a real big fan of luck, go with flat rate.

There are certain skills required to deal with all the various settings and maps, but luck is always a factor. I prefer no card games just to eliminate one level of luck and for the patience and ability it takes to develop one's position on the map.

i always play non cards these days,id say the europe map is the best for it,prefere 8 players,not the greatest for points,but usualy very intresting games .a user group would be very welcome

When I first started playing No Cards, I really liked it. So, almost all my games were No Cards. Then I played a No Cards game of Circvs Maximvs...that game took forever! Just ask Jimi!

I also like no cards, esp. in 1 v 1 games and def. agree it cuts the element of luck to a degree ; everyone knows that multi-player no card games will take many weeks and are much more political and subtle...

i also like the way you can usualy get a second chance,if youve had a realy bad drop,or lost your first battle for a Continent,nobodys trying to kill you just for the cards,so easier to re group.(i dont even mind deadbeats in no cards)

For me, it's about 1 in 5 (=20%)... so voting in the same poll option as 0 seems a little rediculous to me. I would have broken that down differently.

But I'm beginning to think I like no-cards better than the alternatives. I would join that usergroup.

I agree. If you feel that you will need second chances, and time to "re-group", play without cards.

Upon reflection it seems to be that the biggest problem in a no card game, for me is something I call the min unit allotment enjoyment factor. Because of the general uncertanty of the nature of the dice there is just not much you can do with 3 units for example, attack wise. Now even with static cards there is an occasion for an addition 4 to 10 more every so many rounds. With a no card game you can double up, deploy several rounds and then attack but that is mind numbingly boring when this has to take place over a course of several days as might happen in a casual large player game.

And the only time you really remove the dice from the game is when you have large numbers of units, which you don't get with no cards.

Yeah, owenshooter couldn't keep his mouth shut, he keeps telling me how his experiance with the cook school has helped him so much... Of course he couldn't get that high of a rank without someone telling him exactly what to do every turn.

i play only no cards now for the most part. i don't look for games with cards. however, i did a doubles tournament with flat rate prior to getting into the no cards games.

owen -i think escalating takes a lot of strategy.

So, it appears that by virtue of the poll it seems that No Cards is not a very popular option, but at the same time, amongst those posting to the thread it seems to be very popular, especially in a team game setting.

So, at this point, it looks like there could be an interest in a "No Cards Usergroup" although it seems that the players posting who want to find No Cards games can do so without much trouble. I guess the only real benefit to the group would be consistent play with consistent players, which I'm assuming everyone is usually a fan of.

More comments on the value of a usergroup such as this?

I like no cards in 1vs1, but I wouldn't think I'd have much use for a usergroup simply for my gaming preferences.

4.7% escalating (10 games total, 6 were in various tournaments, joined another 3 by mistake because I wasn't really checking what settings they were using (long before the current gamefinder), and only 1 that I wanted to join)
The rest is flat rate.

I started playing no cards in Age of Merchants and later on Age of Realms, and now it's carried over to pretty much all my games except tournaments and speed games.

I like no cards because you're not pressured to do a six on three early in the game. An element of luck is taken out of the game and the game gets to last longer and you get to know people better.

I do not like cards, because it leaves most of the game up to chance.. when a player can get like 40 troops and become powerful out of no where it really bothers me. I like the long, strategic, drawn out no cards lol

i like no cards games. but need to gain more experience in playing no cards free for all. growing up playing RISK, it was ALWAYS cards games -- so only started playing no cards when i started playing CC.

i've done pretty well in team no cards games, and am always down for a doubles or trips no cards game.
