hehe well it is described as: 'Self-governing country in the Kingdom of Denmark'... now the part where it said '.. self governing country..' kind of led me to beleive that is was certainly autonomous .. but also in fact a country ;)

anyway i think there is still debate left in most of this.... Pedro you are a very bad man!

IIRC Greenland is as tied to Denmark as Canada is tied to the UK.

There could be 20 if you count Siam, GB, Ukraine, and Congo!

Is Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo the same thing? China, and Peoples Republic of China, and Republic of China? Great Britain, and The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? It's all kinda arbitrary. If you count those there is 18:
Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Madagascar, Congo, Egypt, Iceland?, Ukraine, Great Britain, Afganistan, India, Indonesia, New Guinea, China, Japan, and Mongolia. Or maybe 17, I'm not sure. (Not the ? on Iceland)

well not really, certainly in the UK/GB case, for example, it's like calling North America the United States of America... some get a little pissed off about that one.

There could be 21 if you count the middle east as a country. ffs
Congo, GB and Siam are not countries. I live in England, so I know that GB isn't a country. All I missed was Ukraine. the answer is 15, so adding another 3 doesn't equal 20.

New Guinea, located just north of Australia, is the world's second largest island, having become separated from the Australian mainland when the area now known as the Torres Strait flooded after the last ice age. The name Papua has also been long-associated with the island (see History below). The western half of the island contains the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua, while the eastern half forms the mainland of the independent country of Papua New Guinea.

pretty interesting.. had no idea that island was split in half and one was an idependent country and the other half is divided into provinces of indonesia... -0

Just some FYI stuff. Great question by the way, generated a lot of talk. I got the answer wrong, so this isn't an "I told you so thing", just some nifty info.

Those in bold are countries, those in italics are the wishy-washy ones. Provinces that are obviously not countries are left out (eg - Alaska, East Africa, etc).

NORTH AMERICA
Greenland - Self-governed province belonging to Denmark.

SOUTH AMERICA
Argentina
Brazil
Peru
Venezuala

EUROPE
Iceland
Ukraine

Great Britain - Refers to the island which bounds Scotland, Wales, and England. Not to be confused with these countries, or the "greater" country United Kingdom.

AFRICA
Egypt
Madagascar
South Africa

Congo - Refers to a region of Africa. There are two countries with Congo in the name - Republic of the Congo, and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

ASIA
Afghanistan
India
China
Mongolia
Japan

Siam - Now known as Thailand, was known as Siam up to 1939, and for a brief period after WWII.

AUSTRALIASIA
Indonesia
New Guinea - Refers to the island. New Guinea bounds the country Papua New Guinea, and the Indonesian province Irian Jaya (formerly known as West Papua).
Western Australia - They may want to secede, but it hasn't happened yet. Australia's interest rate would probably halve overnight if the rest of us didn't have to put up with all the damned wealth they keep pulling from the ground ;)

China is still disputable because there's a Republic of China and People's Republic of China. They both claim that their country consists of the island of Taiwan the mainland, and other islands.

hmm well if you are discounting China you would have to discount many others including:
Republic of South Africa
Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
Argentine Republic
Federative Republic of Brazil

etc etc

Yup, sound just like discounting the Democratic Republic of Congo.
