Duel Players

Postby Fireside Poet on Fri May 19, 2006 8:42 am

as of this moment, I become a deadbeat. How is it that you can have 2 players in the same game, attacking each other at the same time?! Seems that there should be a lockout when one of the players are in the game and THEN another can join in. I was about to take out someone and 45 armies 'mysteriously' appears. THAT is a HUGE bug in my book.

This is a part of freestyle games anyone can play at anytime during the 24 hour period.

If you do not want this to happen you should play sequentail games. Then only one person can be on playing at a time.

If that is the case, it should be notated in the documentation that 2 players can play at the same time. I was of the impression that 'freestyle' didn't mean 'same time', but was saying that there is not a sequence in player play.

I was the player who jumped in a cashed in a set. Yes it is part of the game but a similar situation has happened to me in other game and it is very frustrating. If you are on the verge of eliminating a player you need to rush your attacks to prevent that player or another player from beating you to the punch.

I suggest that a new type of game be established that allows freestyle play without simultaneous play. This also prevents people in unlimited fortification games from waiting to end turn so armies can be moved around to protect against another players advance.

I agree... Freestyle shouldn't meen playing on top of one another. I noticed that my first game and I don't play freestyle games anymore. It also kinda negates the "no double turns" thing if you're playing in a quick game and the player who ended the prior round can cash in seconds after. In no double turns you should at least be locked out until one person ends fortifications.

Maybe it's just me but the thing I find fun about freestyle is how you can be playing at the same time as others, yes its damn obnoxious sometimes but a lot of the time it can be fun. Granted I kinda don't play that much freestyle anymore so maybe that says something,,,,

Come to think of it, it was kinda fun. Seemed mildly unethical though to be fortifying a country while someone was attacking it. But very satisfying.

Some people think they're being cheated when this happens, and some people accept it and adopt it into their game style. Maybe the rules should better explain how freestyle is supposed to be played and if there are any ethical considerations. Or just create a "limited freestyle" so you'd have the option to not have to be watching the game log as you roll.

Perhaps it is the equivalent to the "Hidden Armies" in Castle Risk.

We could have also have a "lockout" option similar to WaW, where freestyle play continues as usual, except if it's your go, other people can't take their turn, and vice versa. It'd have to be deactivated in the last hour of play of course...

Hidden Armies in Castle Risk: in the boardgame, you write on a piece of paper a province/country where these "hidden armies" are before any armies are deployed to open the game. The worth of these armies depends on how many cards have been turned in as turns progress. Once you occupy that province, you can bring out those "hidden armies" to use on your attack, deployed only to that particular province/country. If you do not own that province/country, they are stuck in hiding and if you are eliminated from the game without bringing those armies up, they are transferred to your conquerer. Actually a pretty nice idea for that game and might be worthy exploring as an option for here.

I don't think there is anything wrong about the current freestyle type game - you play and strategize differently to adapt to the rules. It might be interesting to have another option for those who don't like the chaos. I prefer sequential games but the reality is that they just take too damn long. Good point about the final hour being a free for all.

Whatever, thats what makes freestyle fun or a pain in the ass, i guess that all depends on which side you're looking from. I don't do freestyle anymore for that very reason, also, i can't play at work, its blocked! AGH.
