Should Psychology Play a Part?

In poker, it's important to read your opponents if you want to read a high level. But bluffs, and even lies are considered part of the game.
In risk, it's important to read another player's intentions. A lot of people seem to complain here about tactics of deception, real or perceived. This game isn't really risk- you can't see your opponent or talk to them directly. There's more time to think.
It seems to me that a lot of the thinking behind negative feedback or forum posts has an idea of honour behind it, which might seem strange in a modern day simulation of war.
Threatening a negative feedback, or suggesting that a player is cheating can provoke certain players to back off, or attack unnecessarily, just as if you'd questioned an officer's honour on a nineteenth century battlefield.

How far can you push the psychology aspect of the game? What's fair in love and war? And how important is honour and respect compared to success to you?

it is possibly the most important aspect

many games are about who attacks you, not who you attack...if you can find a way to get them to attack each other, though, deployment, attacks, fortification and chat...all the power to you...

but typically coming off negative is not the best method....putting a bullseye on your back may not help...but as a last ditch effort, a suicide threat can be highly useful...

threatening players that arent cheating however is ridiculous in my opinion...ruining a game, and making a false accusation in order to win, might be fine if lives are at stake, but to gain 20 internet points, it just isnt worth it...if you cant win without resorting to outright hostility, whats the point.

I prefer people playing logically in a way they can be relatively sure will ensure their victory or will prevent their defeat.

I know how to deal with them, what means they use is up to them and what means I use is up to me.

I agree. I've not played many games, but I've found that generally I've worked best when I've read my opponents next moves well. I've also played against people who've tried to suggest I should attack another area, or player.
Personally, I don't think I'd use bullying tactics, or even attempt to manipulate another player except through my actions in the game, but it's possible I might suggest something if an opponent was making what seemed to be a big mistake.
But, I also play poker, and I don't really have any worries about using manipulation tactics then.
I guess I was wondering why deception is considered worthy of respect in poker (sorry to use the comparison so much), but not in other games. Your ability to influence your opponent, as opposed to your ability to read them. It's a pretty close thing though.

I know i just thought it was relevant to bring up in this thread as it is one of those 'dishonourable tactics'

Well lies gives you a great advantage in front of your opponent.
But where is the magic of all if you can't use all your tricks to win? 8)

...what do you think of people who lie to win? Say they want an allience for say five turns then break it two turns later when u are weak on your boarder with them...is that fair or not...because after all...this is war...?

Five turn alliances make no sense. In fact, alliances in non-team games have little value at any level.

If I leave my border unprotected it's because I need my strength elsewhere.
If my opponent from my weak side decides to cross said border, I want him to understand that I will lash back and make him pay a price.

There's my psychology and all the "alliance" that I want in a singles game.

So to get back on topic: Yes, psychology plays a part. It's the most critical factor. The dice and the drop all even out. All you have to fight with is psychology, and each game has a different flavor and therefore a different approach to success.

That's all I'll say.

i too use my powerful mind powers over the low life

it is usualy easy to get another play to attack another player just by saying something as simple as "thats it blue your next if you dont stop coming after me"

i have used that so many times i can not even count :roll: and it usualy works to... but i have never threatend neg fb. maybe beacuse i have only left one neg fb in my time here on cc {almost 10 months}

so with that said, yes use everything you can to move up in the ranks and hold nothing back from your mortal enemies
