Unlimited Fortifications

When you are playing a game that has unlimited fortifications, do you like to compile your armies during your first turn, or do you keep them spread out.
I'm currently trying both ways in a few games to see what I like best. I was just wondering what you guys thought.

I like to consolidate my forces into 2-3 larger armies so I can make moves for cards or to knock players out more easily.

It depends on the layout, and the setup of the map. If the other guy has done that, and I do it, chances are he'll roll through all my single armies andcome out next turn with a ton more armies.

It depends what kind of card settings there are as well as the drop.

also would depend on the kind of game, for instance in an assassin game I like to fortify as many countries as I can into one large mass and then steamroll my target.

Useful when there's somewhere to back into and hole up; other wise it just leaves you with a lot of 1s.

if there is a small trail leading into a group of countries that I control none of, i move them out, since they were going to get slaughtered anyways. i generally like to have atleast 4's or 5's on all my exposed edges, nothing less than a 2, if it is a big exposed edge. And usually within the first few rounds.

Generally, yes, but it depends a lot on map type and game type: I'm more likely to move troops in a team game or assassin, and less likely in a Terminator game.

I generally group the one's if I plan to use them to take a continent or attack another player. Keep them in 3's or so if they are 'isolated', it makes it harder to lose armies that way and you could get an extra 1 or 2 army bonus for extra territories.

I never seem to get in any situations where I could consolidate so I haven't tried it yet. But I'm hoping that one day ...

Very difficult to give a simple answer to this question for reasons already mentioned. However, I would like to add that leaving lot's of 1's all over the board is rarely a good thing (easy cards for the opposition apart from anything else) so I try to only move what must be moved strategically and I try to avoid moving anything which is not already 'behind the lines' on round 1.

I put all my armies in neutral zones (ones that won't get continent bonuses) into ones that can. And I tend to put them all in choke points, and leave 2-3 in places. <-- if you get lucky, those 2 can knock out 8. or more.
