Query regarding game screen

This may be a daft question, but does anyone know whether, particularly in realtime games, the game screen can be automatically set to refresh, or do you always have to do this manually, via the "refresh map" icon?

apparently you can download some software that will automatically refresh your screen. I don't have it though so I can't help you beyond that.
