Alright, I know that no one likes to study, but it works. Poo-maker and SkyT and all of those high ranked players got there for a reason. Some luck of course, but also skill. Now this forum is for those who have played any high-ranking player or studied there movements in game log. If you have any strategy that you noticed they use that will get you to the top, or atleast what works for you, post it.

That's what I'm talking about, studying their moves in game chat. See where they reinforce and so on...

the answer to the poll is simply NO.
as for a strategy to get to the top i'm sorry but there isn't such a thing.
you can get to the top in many many ways. they all involve wining games.
assuming you're a rookie that never played risk in his life the best way to start is playing good old classic style risk.
that means 6 player standard escalating chained on classic map. always play with people of your level or a bit above. don't stretch out to far and try getting in high ranked games cause you'll most likely lose and might even end up on a few ignore lists if you do stupid things.
so take it slow step by step and develop your skills. points will come and you'll soon be on top or at least you'll reach your peak. once you reach the peak it's time to find a new way of getting points. that can come from 2 sources singles or team games.
for singles the best way to enhance your win rate is to find a map that you like and that you're good at as well as the settings that suit you best. you'll get specialized. and always play against same rank or higher.
for doubles the map and settings specialization advice plus you need good partners with whom you can talk fast (skype msn) and preferably play at the same time in freestyle games. a well coordinated team is lethal.
of course the most basic need for you to succeed is skill and talent. if you don't have those you'll never make it to the top.

Re: Auto Attack
Auto attack is just a way of reducing mouse-clickage. It's just an algorithm that says "Keep rolling until I win or am reduced to 3 armies." It can reduce your chances of winning in one way.
You know those times, (we've all had them or struggled through the threads containing complaints about them), when you go in 87-24, push Auto Attack and come out 3-21? If there were no AA then you would probably stop at around 18-21, unless you just had to have that country.
Auto Attack makes you vulnerable to those bad dice runs, that's how it reduces your chances.

I don't know, my bro and I had a one on one and he had like 90 guys against my 5 (I know he's good) and tried auto-attack and got down to 70 guys or something. Also, in a 2.1 game my same brother had like another very good situation and lost by using auto-attack. And the last experiance me and my bros have had with auto-attack involved me. I think I had like 15 against only a few and lost, flat out lost.
Therefore I shall NEVER Use auto-attack again.

auto attack is something i always use. yes sometimes my 25v7 ends at 3v5 but other times i've autoattacked 25v25 and won the terit and still had 20 left. it doesn't influence the dice rolls at all.

yes, DiM, you do use it quite often, and that is why i OWN YOU in overall
matches played!!! auto attack is great on freestyle when there is a mad rush going, and you have to get some objectives done quickly. otherwise, i never use it (and i HATE freestyle and rarely play it, so i pretty much NEVER use auto anymore). i find that when i use auto, i generally lose more than i wanted to in the first place. sometimes, you can attack, and realize it just isn't going to happen this turn, and it is better to start your next turn with a higher number to build off of OR use what you have to secure some borders or prepare an attack somewhere else. i just don't like auto-attack. if i start with 12v2 and get down to 8v2, i'm probably stopping right there, and working somewhere else or just ending attacks. with auto, that option is gone. anyway, just my two cents.-0

why would anyone reveal their strategy to get to the top? I mean yes some of us have shared some things, but not everything, experience is good teacher, thats how I learned.
as far as you question in the poll, no in my opinion, I do use it at times, but very rarely. the dice are all random, over the course of more and more games, it evens out.

OK, but what if the map + the settings you like are not popular? You would end up having to start such a game yourself, so you cannot 'control' the rank of your opponents.

yes you can control the rank of the opponents by making private games and posting them in the callouts and asking people over a certain rank to join. also there are various threads like cc2000, oficer's mess and others that host games for people over a certain score (1600 or 2000 or something else)

alright, people keep posting saying there is no one way to get to the top. I know that, I am just looking for a few things that people have noticed high ranking players use. Ex. stop attacking at 5 guys or something

alright just to coment on the poll I started... I never used it after my bro's had some horrible luck with it but decided, if I started the poll and voted that it does reduce chances of winning that I should use it.
My vote remains the same
Maybe auto-attack doesn't like our family, 15 vs. 8 and lost horribly...

I only use auto attack in feestyle, when trying to grab a dying guy's cars before another player, or when trying to stop an oppenent from moving troops.

i auto all the time because im a lazy bastard. it tends to result in more extreme rolls, either good or bad but not so often in between. at high numbers anyway.
another point on this - dice are streaky. sure theyre random etc but there is no doubting that clumps of good and bad luck happen. if youre having a good clump attack if youre having a bad clump then defend or leave your turns til later

one simple tactic, I DON'T AUTO ATTACK

YES IT DOES

In a particular battle it won't change the dice.
Overall, if will change the game.
If I'm going with 20 on 20, and it starts to go bad and I auto-attacked, I can't stop when it's 9 on 16. It'll go until it's 3 on 12, and the game is changed.
Regular attack when I get down to 9 to 16 I'll have a clue that the dice hate me and back off the attack button, thus the game is changed.
The results of the battle in both cases: Defender wins.
The difference: How many armies I have left to fight another day (a game changer)

The number one traits that will keep you from losing games?
Patience and a cool head.
Don't deadbeat just because it's been 200 rounds already and the game might go on for 200 more, don't suicide on others just to get out of the game, don't overdo it if you retaliate, never let a player other than yourself have more than 50% of the armies on the board. Really, it's quite easy to do.
oh, and "classic" Risk is World1.0, sequential, flat rate, no fog
And auto-attack is the win, if you attack 200vs200 you're almost guaranteed a win because of probabilities.

I played a three player freestyle escalating on classic with Paddy (currently 20th) and he of course won, even though we aimed most of our attacks at him after he took an early lead. He did this in large part by waiting until we had finished our attacks, then deploying his armies and retaking his bonus after we had finished attacking or depleted our armies. I thought since he was ending each round he wouldn't be able to collect his bonus before it was broken, but apparently that's not how the rule works.
I'm used to standard where you can't collect a bonus unless it's fortified against attacks, but in freestyle it's enough to just conquering the territories after your opponents have finished attacking.

yes in freestyle all one has to do is conquer back the territs lost and start asap so that the bonus is counted...one of the many reasons i dont use that option anymore. as far as auto-attack i only use it when the territ im after is game-changing or drastically important to me if its a do or die in escalating i press it. if its a key territ for defense or crushing an opponents bonus or better yet both i press it... and then there is the occasional time where i just want to change a game that has reached round 60+ and see what happens. my point is you have to value how much it matters to u. but in the end each player will go and do there own thing

The same tactics will not work in every game you play, so you have to pay attention to how things develop and make adjustments and alter your strategy to fit every situation.
Some games players get way with spreading very thin accross the map without being held accountable by opponents. The reward when it works is what I call a "free range bonus" where the number of occupied territories divided by three is as big or bigger than holding the largest continent.
Other games force you to develop your territories slowly and fortify the borders constantly to maintain a bonus that keeps pace with the game or "turtle" just to stay alive long enough to be competitive again.
If you play an escalating cards game on World 2.1 the auto-attack button is invaluable once the bonus sets go above 50 armies and you're making a mad blitz through all the 1's sprawled accross the map. I don't casually use auto-attack unless I have a large numerical advantage or the game situation requires a quick attack, as often happens in freestyle and speed games.
Joining games with skilled players and watching how they deploy, attack, fortify and deal with different situations is a good way to develop and improve your own tactics.
