... having to give points away to lesser ranks
I'd rather play with similar ranks, risk not winning but at least if i lose not give away so much and, of course, if I win I pick up a commensurate amount of points
hence pro rata stilling showing a 'profit' if I win my correct average
it's particularly peeving in 1 v1 games
is there a group or groups that welcome the higher ranks that I am not aware of?
I only play classic standard no cards but surely that shouldnt prohibit so much should it?

For the 'normal' players who don't have 100+ active games and don't play a ton of trips, Captain is almost impossible to hold because you start loosing so many points to everyone each game, even Lieutenant your point loss isn't nearly as bad.
I was a captain once, for maybe 3 hours, then got my ass busted all the way back to Sergeant FC...
As said, check Callouts for the Officer's Mess or something like that and there's a 2000+ points games thread, etc.

Oh, I don't know about that. You simply have to be good enough to hold your rank IMO. I've held down captain (OK, occasionally dipping into lieutenant) for quite a while without playing trips (mostly cuz I suck) and instead playing larger esc games, 1vs1 games, and any games for tournaments I entered. I even played got tonkaed (who was what, 1300 points when I started playing him?) in a 1vs1 challenge and yes, he gets 30 while I get 15,but if I can't beat him 70% of the time, I don't think I
should gain points, because obviously I'm not that much better (or I'd be a major).

Wait, holding captain is hard without premium? See it like this: You lose points more slowly. It's actually easier to hold a high rank if you don't play very many games, sure it's also harder to rise, but that's a very minor drawback.

Question is you get to captain - a couple of flash-in-the-pan big wins in team games or did you crawl up 10 points at a time playing pick-ups against the cadet/prvts who loiter around after working hours for singles.
If the former, I don't feel so bad for you. If the latter, then that sucks dude!
I've noticed on the leaderboard that there are now a good handful of captians with low game totals, and it seems the 8x terminator is the way to rack up points... upside, even agianst total noobs, is like ~50 if you "win", downside might be 50 too, but then you've go the skills. Better than having to even it out over 100's of games (i.e., premiums only). In fact, I noticed this trend by checking out which captains are freemiums.
Cheers!

I hear you there mate. I have been captain for a solid 2-3 months now, and while i went up & down a few hundred, i usually hover in the 2200-2300 area.
In the last 24 hours, I started at 2453 and was looking to gain major, to losing every fking game I joined, and now I am 1944 points, and about to lose another game.
Every starting roll is negative, and even when i save a few rounds worth of troops, i lose a 12-3 attack. I even just won a 43 to 10 troop attack with 4 spare. What the f#@k?

I'd like to point out that the "beneath my rank" mentality seems to be pervasive. I'm trying to organize a "lead the ranks" quads tournament called Brigade Commander, but only two captains have stepped up to the plate so far.
Clearly losing consistently on dice to players with shitty strategy sucks, but would you feel better loosing 43-3 if it only cost you 20 points - heck no... that would still suck big time.
However, what does it say about the guys who have staked a permanent place at the leader board but are never to be found in the nightly pickup games. I just played 3 pick up games with a new recuit last night and he whopped me so bad in the second game it cost me twice the points. However they were all good games, he played well with a solid strategy and that's what it's supposed to be about.

But if its all about the game and you dont care about points then why should it bother you if no Captains or higher join your games
What you dont seem able to grasp is that the scoring system is designed so that those of similar ability play largely against each other, the only way of gauging ability is points and rank. If I play privates I am risking 50-60 points to gain 7 and probably having to suffer a degree of terrible play as well, where is the fun in that ? I will generaly play against people 600 -700 points lower than me though if I know they are solid players than I will take on people less than half my score, my priority is a good game and the best guarantee is to play high ranks in this regard.
The only way you will ever see across the board mixing of ranks is if you amend the scoring system to a flat win rate, it will destroy the site but hey at least you will see Brigadiers playing cooks regularly
