Continent Grabs

I have a problem. There is something about me that people want to gang up and take me out. It is usually after I secure a second continent; I scroll to the chat window and low and behold, "Red has got two continents, everyone, lets take him out!" and two rounds later I am eliminated.

What can I do to stop this?

Am I going for gold too quick and making myself too known on the map or not fortifying correctly to defend myself or am I not sending out enough propaganda? Help!

when you take a cont, make you sure you can hold it. else they'll just take it

What Kemmler said. Don't rush it unless you have a reason.

What these guys said. CC rarely rewards the front runner. If you managed to secure two continents before everyone else, you're going to see everyone's best shot and often times to the extent that you end up crippled as a result. Of course, honorable players will usually stop at just getting you back in check.

None the less, slowplaying with one very well fortified continent is often the way to go. You'll rarely get attacked because you're not protecting much and you're protecting it with a lot. Those combined make you a very unattractive target. Wait for a moment when a group attack can't be well made to make your move.

Sometimes that means holding on your cards and waiting for everyone to have played their sets. Sometimes that means going for right after two other players have gone after each other. Something like that. Most importantly, of course, is waiting until you can put enough on your borders so that, at very least, two players will have to team up just to make it through one of your borders, not completely gut you.

I'm not too sure, I think I'll just continously deploy armies on a single territory and attack one territory per turn just to get cards (and then start pwning with enough armies)...
but for no cards, I would keep on deploying armies until I know that I have a good chance of making a successful attack...

Thanks guys. It seems I just have to slow my game down and take things a litte more cautous.

Others could learn from your willingness to refine your play style rather than blame the game.

yeah, they certainly could. also, i think it's better to stockpile, whether you get a continent or not. you won't be a prime target, and if you are, you should have enough armies that no one will try to attack you unless they're desperate. this is especially useful in escalating games -- it gives you the perfect starting position for an elimination. this doesn't always work, though...

Stockpiling backfires in escalation games more often than it helps. Typically it comes at the expense of your other armies around the map and ends up making you an easy take-out. In addition, unless you're picking up the pieces after someone else's failed takeout run, you'll typically regret not having strongholds around the map because you'll have a hard time getting to all of your intended targets armies.

it all depends on the map and the card settings and number of players

escalating cards you really should care about cards more than continents

flat rate/no cards you should worry more about continents since you can score nicely off the cards but for those turns you dont have anything to turn in even getting 1 army more than others is a big advantage

more players will shift the focus more into the cards and going for each others throats

less players will lead to people trying to get more armies than others

but in any case if you expand too much too fast ur just asking to be killed

Are you two related or something? You seem to have the same last name.

Make sure you tell the other players to stop attacking you once you are weakened. And don't persist for a continent that will be too hard to hold.

depends on your game too...if there are cards involved...or its 4 player or less...usually one cont is enuf...
its much less easier to take many territories and not take a whole continent...you keep your armies and still get a bonus if that makes sense. more terr's = more armies

Yeah, taking a bonus or a continent is just going to make you a target. It's great if you can hold it but going too fast just alerts everyone to your power and before you know it you're out. I agree with the advice from the veterans here.

Wow... thanks guys. I'm just out of a speed game (Game 2329340) using my altered strategy based on your advice and beat (well, held out long enough for them to give up) a corporal 1st class and sergeant 1st class. Maybe not big fish to some of you but I have never stood a chance against such ranks before. Thanks for all the advice people. =D>

Hugs and kisses,

I've noticed that newer players tend to aatack too much. Once they learn patience, some will end up not attacking enough until they learn the balance a little better. keep playing and you'll win more games.
