so let's say I and another fellow form a legit alliance in game chat for all to see. 3 rounds later, i'm ready to call the alliance off. can i pm him about it or do i have to say so in-gam?

you have to say in game or you are liable to end up with a big negitive. It is also the right thing to do. You can pm also but you should mention it in game chat.

Or you could just attack the other guy and win the game, he might be pissed about it, but as long as you win quickly he can't claim you did something wrong. If the game continues for another 100 rounds though, you can expect a neg from him for being unsportsmanlike.

End the alliance the same way you formed it... with clear terms in the Game Chat.
If you break it with an attack or a secretive PM it's grounds for a neg feedback that
is the type many players will hold against you in future games.

Unless you win within a few rounds, I know I wouldn't hold it against the other player if I were in an alliance and he took out me and everyone else within a few rounds. Nor would I hold it against him if he attacked me to keep me from winning within the next 1 or 2 rounds, I really see alliances as little more than expressly stating what everyone should realize needs to be done in order not to lose.
