the rules are the same. It's just the lay-out that's different. Some maps are probably best to avoid at first. I'd recommend trying maps like Africa, British Isles, Brazil, Canada, USA, North or South America, take a look at a map before you join the game, and if the legend has anything other than names of continents and the related bonuses, you might want to avoid them, for now. Have fun, there are a lot of cool maps here on CC.

i love learning new maps, but mostly because i play doubles, and it is fun to sit and read the legend with a partner on skype, and try to decipher it, and figure out an advantage the other team may not realize.. ane then, once you get the hang of a new map or a more difficult map that people may not want to take the time to learn, it is a points bananza... just lots of fun to roll up people on a map after you have taken the time to study it...-0

p.s.-isn't there stuff in the maps forum too?

1. Read the legend.

2. study the map before playing your first game.

3. Maybe look in on a game or two played without fog (Game Finder, check game type, and "non fog" -- speed, if possible or 2 person will be quicker).

4. try visiting the strategy section of forum, but I have found that more helpful after a game or 2 (before then, its all "gobbledy gook" ... I don't know enough about the map to make sense of the ideas)

5. Play, Play, Play, PLAY and PLAY ... and don't worry too much about rank. You will play, learn... and go up, with a few "bumps in the road" until you find your "place". Choose -- do you wish to play or just gain rank? Its up to you!

oh, for a brief rundown ...
Most are pretty much like Risk, just shaped differently (even Crossword!)

Some have bombardments, which means you can attack, but not take over the country by "remote". (Civil War, Fuedal, Duck Hunt, Waterloo, ... etc.)

Some have different objectives that you can go for INSTEAD of taking over everybody else, but usually just conquering everyone is quicker and easier (Realms maps, Fuedal)

Some have all kinds of bonuses and such (Waterloo, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Gazala, New York, etc.)

Some have resource pairs that give you bonuses instead of territories. Age of Merchants, Realms.

Both Fuedal and Realms start out with just you owning castles, then you move out from there.

Some have slightly "tricky" attack paths (one-way and such) Mad house, Chicago, Civil War, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Waterloo, New York, etc....

READ THE LEGENDS!
