What's With the Attitude CC???

For your amusement: Game 2396344

Here's this game from my perspective: I'm looking for a quickie game before I move on with my day and see this is about to start and it's freestyle and I need some practice there so why not. I join Game 2396344 and by the beginning of the 2nd round the higher-ranked player who started the game is throwing a fit and b*tching at green's move (which I can't see cause I have no armies in Oceania). Apparently green suicided red there and then red immediately decided to give up the game and told me just to take europe and he would move out and let me win. I ended up winning through no fault of my own and then got accused of cheating and I think added to red's ignore list.

The part I don't understand but yet see ALL THE TIME here on CC is higher ranking players FREAKING OUT when a lower ranked player makes a move that they themselves wouldn't make and then spazzing out and adding people to their ignore list. This is why I don't understand and this behavior pisses me off:

DON'T TELL YOUR OPPONENTS HOW TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good lord people it's Risk or something like it. Don't count on your opponents for anything. Now I understand why it sucks cause it ruins your game but it happens to everyone! I thought we were supposed to be strategic, if a person is a lower rank obviously their not playing like the higher ranks so why would you count on them to make a move you might make or even a good move?

Accept that some people are just learning. Accept that people make mistakes. Accept that people won't always make move YOU want them to.

And in this case I was just the bystander and I still got accused of cheating?!

Now I'm half expecting to get flamed by some higher ranks for posting this and hearing stuff like "We lose so many points yadda yadda yadda" yea it's true and it sucks but it's just a game. Go make a private game next time if you're so scared.

You are right in sooo many ways Luvr! (maybe all ways)... However i have found myself castigating others for 'stupid' or 'less cultured' moves.
the problem is that there are so many accepted, stylised modes of play which fall into the bracket of unspoken rules. It is sadly inevitable in a place where information and learning become public property. We do by definition have our own little sub-culture; with nuances/codes of behaviour, pecking orders and ritualised gaming practices.

Now that makes it all rather too serious, i completely agree and it does remove a great deal of the fun of the game and replaces it with something slightly deeper. As such this silly-site moves into the realm of more than the niche which games and fun have traditionally occupied in human existence.
Sadly this site and sites like it begin to occupy territories previously occupied by other less fickle pursuits and becomes a microcosm of life... in some cases it becomes life.
That sounds very perverse and it is, but i hope it does go some way to explaining why many members are so anal when it comes to these very unimportant things.

Let's be honest your score here is completely unimportant compared to codes of behaviour; kindness, generosity etc. But for the reasons outlined above and due to the 'anonymity' which the username persona offers, people often become quite unpleasant; exhibiting characteristics outside of their normal behaviours.
A little like when you see your demure, lovable, kind and passive friend transform into a raging, foul-mouthed, maniac behind the wheel of the safe, protected territory of their car.

I totally agree that it's a game and many players hate being bossed around,
so I have no problem with your rant as it's pretty logical for a girl. ;)

Ok, I don't have any qualms about it now since you're a female. So, do take care and don't let your emotions get the best of you over a simple matter.

Hehe I agree with you and I understand how there's unwritten rules of play and such. My post is more or less a reminder that these things are unwritten/unspoken and some people take longer than others to learn these things, don't have time to look beyond what's there (don't bother with the forums etc.) and still others even if they know, just don't care. As long as it's a public game you could run into these people and I think it'd be more enjoyable if some people realized this and maybe helped those people along (or not, cause it's not your responsibility to teach but if you don't then be prepared for those people to not learn)

And besides, there's a difference between constructive criticism and going completely off the wall ;)

I don't care whether I'm against a higher or lower rank. If you do a stupid move I will tell you. It's just usually lower ranks that do it.

No move is stupid, unless you want it to be so.
Risk is probably one of the easiest games to play and there is a HUGE element of luck to it. I dont care what the colonel's and so on say, this game is HUGELY based on luck! Most of the high rankers have craved out their niches in freestyle, dubs or trips games.

Now I think im quite qualified to comment on this having sustained over 2000 points for the last 4-5 months.

Indeed, things such as rank are of absolutely no importance are they Seulessliathan....that's why you eschew the plethora of self congratulatory, mutual backslapping threads, full of self serving platitudes, congratulating players on their promotions while the peasants in the lower ranks press their snotty noses up to the window wishing they could be like you, eh old chap......

I generally try most of the time time to be polite in my games. Sometimes I see a really stupid move. Generally speaking I try not to complain, and I don't think I ever have, but I typically silently say a WTF and I might throw in a personal note to myself to remind me of the player's ability to make very odd moves.

It is important to remember that some of my worst moves were a result of not paying attention to every click of the mouse. I give the benefit of the doubt to others at all times.

Some of the types of games do have the "unwritten" social norms. Personally I have never encountered these types of situations so I can't really comment on them.

The real challenge is not anticipating what the colonel will do, but rather what the cook will do.

You can plan for someone with a strategy, but not for someone who blindly attacks making the poor player a more dangerous opponent.

The mark of a good player is that they can plan for, adjust to and beat someone who has absolutely no strategy...and do it with dignity and grace. These are things which are sadly lacking in some of our higher ranked players me thinks.

But yes, I do agree with you, it's a pain when you play a diva, be they high ranked or low ranked.

i used to try to tell people when they make silly moves in a game, in interest of helping them for the future, however i had to stop because about 75% of the time they have the response of "shut up your not my real dad, you cant tell me what to do" and then they suicide, however i would never abandon a game no matter how stupid someone is playing, nor would i ever throw a game, or stop trying to win. red in that game was being a whiney douche. and i think most high ranked players would agree with me. im shocked to see that type of behaviour from a major. seems to me that its almost proof of points inflation, lol. having a 2000 rank used to mean you have a level head, of course now with all the gimicky maps, and points inflation, we end up with alot of so-called high rankers that have only mastered one style of gameplay and are totally oblivious that different maps/styles require different strategy.

You guys are just awesome. I was very prepared to be flamed but it seems many people agree with me. Makes me feel good about CC again! (and if you're ever in a game with me you can critique all you want just be polite ;) )

I have only seen one incredibly stupid and absolutely pointless move where someone deployed an amazing amount of armies behind their own lines when they could have taken the game. Clearly this was in my best interest, as I was hanging on by a thread, but I still let him know what a jacka$$ he was, and, wait a second, he is my real dad too, so am I allowed to do that???

The fact of the matter is that this is the only thing most high rankers are good at. My mates are always calling me a nerd/geek (which im not) for spending so much time on the clan and CC. Most of the time I spend on CC is when im working

i don´t see the problem fruit, jim said there are more important things than score and i agreed, nevertheless some people have goals here and they are happy if the reach this goals. Is it bad to congratulate in this case? Where did i wrote something which sounds like self serving plattudes?
Do you disagree with the others and say that score is the holy grail for being happy?

It´s a game, and games are always for havong fun, some people try to measure with the best and have goals, but i believe for most people fun is always more important. You can´t buy anything for points, but you can do a lot of interesting things instead of spending your time at CC. In my opinion points aren´t the reason for playing this game ... well ... maybe your opinion is different ....
i´m suprised that you consider me in this way, but it doesn´t matter for me if you believe that i´m only after points or not, i still agree with Luvr and Jim ... and i still will have fun here, no matter what people think about me.
