Idle thought - terminology

Postby spurgistan on Mon May 12, 2008 7:44 pm

Why is sending all of your armies in a last ditch and mostly futile - nay, symbolic - effort to win called "suiciding?" As America's sagacious president declared, for one thing, aren't they really "homicide bombers?" But seriously, I feel that this action is more reminiscent of the banzai, in which doomed Japanese soldiers would launch an attack on the enemy in lieu of surrender and in the hopes of dying the death of a soldier? Isn't this a more dramatic term than "suicide?" Think of when, with your back to the proverbial wall, you turn in that last pathetic red set and deploy on Indonesia and attack out into Asia to rescue the world from the tyranny of your opponents... is "suicide" really evocative of that? Or, would it be a much more strongly emotional pinning thought to believe that your soldiers are bravely dying... FOR THE EMPEROR!

this may be culturally insensitive, now that I think about it. Maybe that's why. But I find it a moving tribute to going down with your guns blazing, to not go quietly into that dark night, to die... with honor. I feel that "suicide" (negative connotation) dissuades one from suiciding, while the banzai is a powerfully strong connotation of the warrior code. I beseech you, think about it.

I still think Banzai is still too negative. We should replace it with a word that better signifies the sheer coolness that is using the dying remnants of your once proud nation to blow a gaping hole in your opponent's side, thereby costing them the game and sending them into spasmodic fits of teeth-gnashing, arm-flailing and whine-thread creation.

As such I would replace the term 'suiciding' with the term 'awesoming' (and similarily replacing the term 'suicide' with the term 'awesome'). Or if you were feeling more inclined to greater accuracy than to mollycoddling children who might be encroaching on this den of serious business, then I would suggest using the word 'fucking-awesoming' as the new prefered terminology.

Thoughts?

I suggest a bukkake for everyone who goes banzai and suicides.

Honourable death my ass. They kill themselves during a futile attack and once they're out they have no chance of winning anymore, as long as a player is a alive they have a chance of winning, that chance isn't something you throw away.

the difference between a last ditch effort and a suicide is that in a last ditch effort you stop after its painfully obvious that you wont make it. suicide is when you continue even tho you have only 30 armies left and the other person has 50.

seppuku my learned friend is basically ritual suicide practised by the samurai. this was done by cutting horizontally across your stomach and then upwards... you would usually have someone ready to chop your head off before you start screaming in agony.

if ya screamed... ya screwed it up... or your liege lord denied you 'permission' to have someone ready to chop it off.

Honourable death my ass. They kill themselves during a futile attack and once they're out they have no chance of winning anymore, as long as a player is a alive they have a chance of winning, that chance isn't something you throw away.

so how about 1v1 on classic and you have one country left... am i supposed to deadbeat? or just deploy... or just CHARGE!!!

i only venture into awesoming *lol i love that word* when its something like that where what i do largely doesnt matter unless the dice gods decide to be nasty to my opponent.

The commonly used term I've heard is "suicide bomber" as a homicidal bomber is more likely to plant an explosive device somewhere and detonate it from the safety of a remote location. Kamakaze might be a more appropriate word than banzai for that occassionally final, damn the torpedoes, go for it effort, when you want to go down swinging. Banzai!!! is what you yell while pressing the attack button to launch that momentum changing all out assault.

is it better to burnout than to fade away?

Right, f*ck this. You people need to see how brilliant my suggestion is.

Behold how it would look in reality:

Feedback received by Arbitrary Example Player

Negative This player cost me the game. I held two continents and was going to win (so long as the other two opponents ignored my superior board position and blindly cannibalised each other) until this player commited awesome and broke both of my bonuses. This player is a dangerous fucking-awesomer, and his awesomeing attacks cost me the whole damn game. I lost ten arbitrary points; this is a big thing for me. Perma-Ban all fucking-awesoming players at once!!!!1

See? Isn't that the most fucking cool and non-confusing thing you've ever seen? Come on people, let's make the change that's right for the future, and for our children's future.

Awesomeing FTW!!!!oneoneoneoneoneone

Banzai sounds good.
much better than "suiciding".
Cause its never really suiciding. its taking your last chance, hoping for some good luck.

I wouldn't say "never". Sometimes, it really is suicide.

i hate to be picky but its KAMIkaze.

kami=divine
kaze=wind

kamikaze=divine winds

jap pilots were taught to believe that they were the divine winds that saved Japan form Mongol invasion twice. they literally believed they were gods on earth.

Did you really just correct somebody on language and then proceed to call Japanese people "Japs?"

I'd say that being an ass and giving the game to somebody else by "banzaiing" (or fucking-awesoming) into somebody who didn't deserve it isn't all that cool, but even if they didn't I like to pretend they did and go out guns blazing. It just seems so quintessentially American.

That may be the first time I've ever used the word, "Quintessentially."

I think there's some confusion here (in this thread, and CC, in general) over the difference between a last-ditch, hail-mary, shot, and a true suicide run.

I suggest "Bonsai!" as the official CC battlecry.
