From what I've seen it looks like it is random, but i don't know very much. Is there any method to how someone is chosen to go first?

There is also another theory, if its 1v1 and you are playing me you go first. In 3 tourney series (2 3 game ones and a 5) I didnt go first in a single game. Oh well, it random I just felt like sharing.

Suggestion: If someone "randomly" starts with a bonus continent, such as the mapmaker was too lazy or zoned out to think about balanced gamepley, then the random order should be trumped by a rule that gives the person without the bonus the first move. If there are two starting bonuses, then unless they differ by >2, it would still be random.
