Best Games To Play

Hi, I am new and really not sure how all this works yet. I couldn't believe all the different maps there are here. I am familiar with Classic Risk only. Can anyone give me tips on what games play similarly to Classic? I think I am really going to enjoy this site and will probably get a membership. Thanks for any help.

About half of the maps play similarly to Classic. If there are any different rules for that particular map, it will be written on the map. As for recommendations, I personally like Doodle Earth and Crossword.

USA, Middle Earth, Canada and British Isles are very popular and quite similar to Classic.

Most maps do not play similar to Classic. Aside from having different sizes (number of territories and bonuses), they may have special territories which can attack long distances (bombard), auto-deployments, and one way attacks (although British Isles has this). Other maps have strange designs (like Crossword, Conquerman) which turn away new players.

*edit* Read the instructions page before you play more complex maps. Some of them do strange things.....

It really all depends on what styles you like. Once you try a few you will get the hang of it and learn your likes and dislikes a little better. For starters I wouldn't try any of the harder maps.

Here is the forum for Strategy CLICK HERE

Here is where you can go to see who to contact for specific help in the site CLICK HERE

Here is a list of the maps. I had saved this list but cannot remember for the life of me where I copied it from:

1) Simple - If you understand risk you can just read the continent values, and jump in and play.

2) Moderate - If you understand risk you can understand this, but you'll need to read a rule or two in the legend first to get it. You could probably still jump in and play and be alright though.

3) Complex - It can be understood, but it make take you some reading and a bit of playing before you fully get it, there are many rules. Can't just jump in and play without reading or you'll miss things.

4) Extreme - You pretty much need BOB (script to help you understand the map) or have an avid background in strategy games before you can understand this map. Even with reading through all the rules you could still be confused and miss things without several play throughs.

try to stay away from large maps with lots of terts especially number style terts that use a numbering system rather than words for tert names. a prime example would be d-day omaha beach. ive played on here for a year or so and i totally messed up on that map cause of all the numbers and such.

good luck in ur world domination.

Stay away from maps which automatically take away an army before your turn even begins. As far as I know from what other players have told me, USA Apocalypse and Dustbowl are two of the maps which does this. There are probably others that do this as well but I'm sort of a newbie myself.

you can click on the tumbnails to see an image of the map, all maps have 'legends' on it that descripe what the point of the map is (some maps for example have a so called 'objective' this means you can win by holding 'territory X and Territory Y' on the start of your turn.) some maps have a 'different bonus system' then classic, some of them might even have different 'attack routes' then you might be used too, and some of them might just be plain confusing for new players. don't worry, you have enough to choose from and you can also find a lot of information and help on the forums.

just start with playing the 'classic' type maps (most often the maps of 'the world') like france, europe, world 2.1, and most other maps that are actually maps of continents or countries, als 'middle earth' is pretty much a classic map.

the rest of the maps have most of the time either a 'slightly different' playing style or a 'completely diferent expierience' and some of them might be really easy to figure out while others might require staring for hours at the map just to have an idea of how to play it. and some maps even i don't really play because they are too confusing for me (like battle of actium, it's a nice map but it's pretty much confusing me so i hardly ever play it)

so find a map or a few maps you like, and play them as much as you like. or just stick to 1 or 2 maps. your choice

btw. besides 80+ maps, there are also a lot of settings, like no cards, flat rate or escalating, that might have a big impact on the playing style and strategy you need to win in those games, and there is even an option to play in the 'Fog of War' have fun!

actually, actium can be considered pretty standard with the occasional bombardment and long range attack capabilities.

id stay away from maps such as ardennese or iraq with their alien set up and gameplay. those 2 scare me.

You guys are great, thanks. I am trying to absorb it all. It will take some getting used to, but coming into the forum definitely helps. :)

My personal favourites are World 2.1 and Europe. World 2.1 is basically Classic but each continent is divided into sub-continents. This makes it much easier to gain a bonus and makes it more viable for many-player games. Europe is a nice well balanced map that is fun to play on.
Are you familiar with game modes? I usually play no-card games, but this can cause problems when players fort their armies into huge piles due to no incentive to attack. I don't understand escalating card games, there's a whole different level of strategy there.
Anyway good luck to you, I hope to play you sometime
