Fast Connections...

I always lose to my friend Riskmaster101 because of a bad connection... but this is crazy.
I see an AoR1 casual freestyle game with a major (coded). Knowing I can win it, I join quickly and enter the game. By the time I'm in the game he's already taken his turn! Every time I begin my turn he takes his in a second whilst I'm still loading,... it's ridiculous!

I know exactly what your talking about. I think I raised the issue in every one of the "clickable map" threads that were the theme du jour a few weeks ago.
I have no explanation, other than there is a problem with the server and poor architecture of the system. I thought about it for a while, and it would make sense if all these super-fast players are on the same backbone (i.e., they all go to college together or something)... because I get hosed even from my T1 connection at the office.
It's really frustrating. I think it was yeti who suggested using "refresh map" instead of hitting f5. I tried and find that the "refresh map" link is pretty flaky as well... lots of times the image hangs and doesn't show the numbers, or you just sit there.
I think this one is being ignored b/c it probably would require a big overhaul of the game engine to try to adjust for different rates of connectivity.

i see 2 solutions:
1. get a faster connection
2. don't play freestyle

Um, what part of the fact that I'm playing on a T1 don't you understand...?
And actually I don't play lots of freestyle for just that reason, which is a shame b/c it would otherwise be really fun.
Face it, there is an issue with the site, but unfortunately - and realistically - its probably something that would be too costly to address (unlike simulating 2MM random dice rolls manually

)

was i talking to you?
i was giving advice to the op i don't care what you connection is.
PS: even if you have a T1 it can be slower than dial-up depending on how you use it

My bad... I didn't see where you referred to / quoted the OP...

True, but its not like we're running AOL out of my office...!

But honestly, I get that a lot of people connected with the site go to school up in Canada or something, but how many do you think are on the same Internet backbone?

Definitely close any programs that access the internet (other than your browser) while playing a game, if you're concerned about speed. Torrents are a HUGE contributer to this. I've had problems finishing turns in sequential speed games, while my torrent program was active. I can only imagine what kind of problems that would cause if I was trying to play freestyle.

Well, I looked up what uTorrent is... I'm sure they won't let me put that on my computer at the office. But generally speaking, what are some examples of the "torrents" as in "close all torrents"?

torrents are basically files... utorrent is the client you use tto download them. thats where everyone gets their movies and music

If you had to look up torrents, they definitely aren't causing you trouble. That's the only thing I've noticed that consistently affects my connection speed.

true that, especially those massive porn torrents...
not that i know anything about those
anywho... the best advice i can give to the original author of this thread is to stop playing freestyle

are you perhaps running greasemonkey? it can slow down the load speed for the page. can try disabling greasemonkey while playing freestyle.
