I'm confused... counted 17. looked at the map, its still 17.

Made an image to go with it:

Click the link to see it.
matches the list SFH posted, too.

even checked it against wikipedia's list of countries:

Quickly in my head i could think of 13....

Which means there is probably 2 or 3 more,
but i just drove 400 miles and my brain is spent...

i'm off to see the answer now...

I counted 17 in my head yet counted Great Britain... which I thought was interchangeable with the United Kingdom :S.

Before the XML switched over to using "territory," there were 42 "countries." ;)

So here's the real question: what about siam? T'was once a real country (and still is, just under a different name), and while the terit covers quite a bit more territory than Thailand rightfully should, you could say the same about some of the other terit/countries on the map.

Well, then, if Congo were still called Zaire, would it count?

Then it could be argued that, instead of representing a given country called "Congo", the Congo terit instead encompasses a larger region that encompasses both Congo nations, plus an unspecified acreage of the Congo River's watershed. Thus, Congo would no more represent a country than Middle East. ;)

yeah, if it was called Republic of the Congo or Democratic Republic of the Congo then it would be officially a country.
so just Congo won't count...

Thus, since the terit called "China" isn't called "People's Republic of China", China itself could conceivably be disqualified.
