hiding ranks?

do you think that you should hide your ranks from the people you are playing your games with?

Main reason is during standard games, when down to a few players, sometimes players tend to help the highest ranked player to avoid point losses. One scenario, me, some guy with 2400 points, guy with 800, and 1300, the guy with 2400. There has been a few cases where the guy with 800 points nearly won, and we did everthing we could to stop him. Now suddenly I had the upper hand, and it would take all their combine effort to take me down, but the 2400 guy didn't feel like losing 60 points as oppose to less than 20 if i won, so instead of attempting to work together, helps me win.

Should that be the case? Perhaps hiding your rank from players who you are playing with may solve that problem.

P.S. I didn't particularly look forward to potentially losing 80 points that game while winning a 8 play game on average gives me only 50 points :C

1- They can just look at the scoreboard and 2- why hide something that most are obviously striving for? 3- Rank determines the lineup- hIgh ranks draw players to fill the game

I think it's garbage that players do that but it's unfortunate that some still do. I may not be happy losing X amount of points, and of course would rather lose as least as possible but not where it influences the outcome of the game. On the flip side, some high ranks do it to each other all the time, there seems to be a jealousy factor that they don't want you to exceed them , so they suicide or help someone else win. It's going to happen, it's part of player's simple mentality and part of the game that we will keep having to deal with as long as this site is a competitive one.

It can be reported. King Achillis has already made it clear if someone tries to do it, it's a gross abuse of the rules. Repeated abuses will most likely result in punishment, you just have to report it, just as you have to report any kind of abuse.

I also dislike the idea of hiding ranks because I like to know when I'm next to a cook in a game - I tend to get away from them if possible.

I believe there was a suggestion for "anonymous" games somewhere - which mean that you would be called "Player 1" "Player 2" etc - with no ranks displayed...

Seemed like a good idea to me.

so you terminate people for their points - perhaps you've never been suicided and excluded due to a high rank. players such as myself never play terminators since we fear we will be suicided by cooks who see the rank - indeed it happened last termie i played. this suggestion would only improve termie games trust me

Why?

I see no increase for Multi's if this happened - when the game finishes - the names are revealed... so any Multi's using this would be pretty easy to uncover.

i understand your point but i don't think ranks should be hidden. It adds to the allure of the game knowing what kind of player you're competing against. Also, I don't want to enter a game where its all cooks and privates.

However this appears to be an epidemic problem. I recently was in a game where a corporal was rooting me on after he had been eliminated because of the point factor. He didn't do anything to help me win but I found it odd that a corporal was so worried about this.

Imagine if you're a private and you're playing against 4 highly ranked players, you play a great game, you're in a position to win but the surviving players decide to weaken you because of the point factor. I'd feel very cheated.

Being piled on is part of the game of risk/cc as well. People need to except that and not act as if it is some sort of amoral action that only they suffer. It happens. Just like bad rolls, piling on the strongest player in game, suicide players and and folks that make mistakes that you wouldnt in a million years make.

People see a higher rank and they see a "Better" player then themselves so they need to eleiminate the threat. I always assume that a higher ranked person is a better player then me anyways

Perhaps we should petition to not only make folks anonamous but to see to it that one can not be attacked by more then one person per turn cycle.

I play nothing but term. Cooks are more than welcome to join. I lose to all ranks and still stay at diamond or sword!!

I was completely against this till in a tournament game I got paired up against lower rankers and this was a comment from the game

2008-07-07 13:22:18 - PaulusH: We have to be fast. I propose we all concentrate on killmanic. Then we can illiminate him befor his turn. Everybody is has an area next to his.

He wanted to get rid of me before my first turn because of my rank.

hmm...ive helped or stopped lower rankers from winning a game - purely because i dont like the way that i work hard for points...then loose twice as many on a noob getting luck. i call it balancing the game
j/k - but i do 'discriminate' against lower ranked players, i didnt like it when i was a cook (yes, ive been there. its terrible) but i still do it :(
i dont think you should hide the ranks because it would be too complicated...ways to get around it easy. e/g going on their forums posts or something. and if you hid the forum post ranks - whats the point in having ranks if no one knows about them?

Kiron,

You compel me to reply as I think I'm the player in question here. Just for the record I didn't help you win at all - from Round 32 (Game 2674377) I did all I could to stop you. My downfall was it being a freestyle game and you managed to get a double turn in ahead of me. My parting comment was "I'm glad you won as it saved me losing a potential 90pts" but in no way did I try and take yellow down and not you (besides, he had been the one constantly attacking you - I was loving it!).

I play to win, always. If I can't then naturally there is a sense of relief if the highest rank takes the game, but I shan't go out of my way to accommodate that during gameplay. Why give you the game?

This particular game also had an interesting incident at the start, where one player (a noob) was doing extremely well - far too well in fact for it to have been his first game according to his playing history. I certainly made a comment to the effect that I wasn't happy to lose so many points to a noob who was quite obviously a very experienced player and was harvesting points off high-rankers on this new account. He was busted for being a multi a couple of days later.

On the topic of hiding rank - I don't see how that can feasibly be done. In terminator games it would be great if everyone was on a level playing field, because as a high rank you will immediately be a target (of anyone with any sense). In any other format it doesn't faze me, as one has to eliminate all other players to win any points.

t-o-m maybe wrote the most succinct answer.

Anyway....I pride myself in playing fairly and there should be no inference otherwise. I do appreciate the discretion you used though, when referring to the game in your opening remarks. Thank you for that :-)

i, unlike some, think its great to see who your playing and what rank they are...
if one looses to a noob, then he/she deserves to loose more points.. i know there are circumstances that cant be avoided in a game( bad dice, people ganging up on you due to rank), but as a hole, i think its better.. and as gannable saud, it adds to the allure of the game..
when i first started, i did once or twice go for higher ranked people, because i knew they were better than me, and i wanted to get rid of them so id have better chances...
having a higher rank, will put a target on you...

NO

for one: you can look at page 1 of scoreboard, for two: most on here know who has high scores, three: make an attempt in singles to just invite higher scores to your games to avoid this.
