Decent strategy?

http://www.conquerclub.com/game.php?game=2869529There were no spots with 1s for an easy Card, so I just put the 3 on China, but noticed a good possibility for a Continent bonus, so I took the other adjacent territories and put their people on China. Is this a sound strategy or does something like this work only if it goes unpunished?

Looks good to me. The others dont have enough adjoining provinces to mount an assault like that on Australia. And you have 2 provnices in Aus already. Just take it carefully, don't over-stretch, and don't exhaust your armies all in one go on Red, otherwise Green or Blue will sneak in behind you after you've paved the way

It may have been a decent thought, but now that you've seen red's move, plans must change.
It's always good to allow one round to pass so that you know the intentions of all the loose cannons and non-factor players at the table. In this case, red has committed to Oceania, and it isn't worth your effort/armies to fight for it. I'd suggest stock-piling armies near green and hoping he or she starts to make mistakes (a quick look at that player's history will show this is a considerable likelihood). Position yourself best to eliminate green and keep away from the advances of red.
Of course, each turn will bring new analysis, especially amongst lower-ranked players who tend to be more volatile and unpredictable.

what map are you playing with uzbekistan and tajikistan? (talking about your sig)
