The "unacceptable name" debate

This comes up a lot in Cheating & Abuse I've noticed. Since that isn't really the place for debates, I thought I'd make a topic here in GD for it.

So - should CC not allow names such as "The New Nazi", "H I T L E R", and the like? What should be done about it?

Personally, I say that not allowing any username is ridiculous, but I'm tired and don't feel like going into why at the moment...

There is NOTHING wrong with names like Hitler or The New Nazi.

Let's try to look at this logically.

Hitler attempted to conquer the world - he succeeded with virtually all of mainland Europe and was one of the most feared dictators of his time. Go figure a name like Hitler would be used in a game of world conquest - or ANY strategy game at that.

Same with "The New Nazi." The Nazis were in power when Germany was at war in WWII. "The New Nazi" could be a name referring to a new Nazi that is still around that is going to go for world conquest. It makes perfect since to me. Such as having a new "Ghengis Khan" or something.

I see no problem with the names... just as if someone created a name "Osama Bin Ladden" Its a free site and people should be allowed to express themselves freely and it should all be allowed.

Just did a quick check on the electoral register(UK) and there are at least 5 people with the surname 'Hitler' living here. It is after all only a name and they should be allowed to use it should they wish to.

I think it depends but I would in general err on the side of censorship. (As odd as that sounds comming from an American of all people.) My basic reasoning is that people tend to make names merely for their preceived "shock" value and without understanding the implications of such names and how other people might preceive it.

And you're saying that because some want to use a shock value that we should now censor? Next we should prohibit movies like SAW from coming out and such. All pornography on the internet should be banned too, that definitely shocks those with a weak mind.

Frankly I do not believe you. Your credibility has gone to zero as far as I am concerned. This has, on the other hand cemented this for me. This is offcially my last post. I am not comming back. Goodbye.

And go to hell.

anyway, i think the admins handle it well when it is an obvious infraction. they allow the user to change their name, and move on... anyway, is there a new hitler on the site?-0

The names don't concern me unless they are blatantly racist/sexist/etc. It's when someone named "The New Hitler" runs around the boards screaming "Death to JEWS!!!" That's what bothers me.

And, for the record, I have no problems with Jewish people whatsoever.

Then get him if he's screaming Death to JEWS. Don't get him for the name. Because the name very well might be symbolizing not racism of any sort, but instead military relentlessness and prowess. Merciless and forceful. What type of name do you expect in a game of world domination?

I wasn't disagreeing with anyone that said that they don't mind the names. I don't mind the names.

Feck negative connotations, depending on who/where you are you could argue that for almost every word/name in existance. I'm with Sentinel on this, the name is fine but if starts to cause problem just send him packing.

Nope, doesn't sound odd at all.

There are even laws in my country here that gets you in jail by using these kind of names and of course and of more importance there connotations.
Personally I won't bother, I just find it very stupid to use these kind of names. You just have a lack of respect towards certain values and people even races.
Just my two cents

Same kind of laws here (geographically), too, but I don't quite see the point of it on a website. Let people use whatever name they want, the only difference between a widely known insult and, for example, wacicha, is how many people get it. The people who use them should just be prepared for the flak when others take offence. As long as it's halfway recognizable as a name or description of the player it's fine, if someone used "Kill the jews" as a username, though, it's clearly not a name or self-referential.
