Playing Risk Makes Me Immature?

I recently had a discussion with someone from work about playing CC and its effect on my maturity level. First of all, a little information about me and the area in which I live. I'm 28-years-old and live/work in a very rural area in, what some might consider, a "manly" profession. The area I live in is rife with "men's men"; people here hunt and fish like crazy and think doing so makes them more of a man than some. I guess killing a requisite amount of living creatures automatically makes you a man, because anyone who doesn't do so is ridiculed and belittled by those who do.

So, this guy at work sees me checking my games on my lunch break and asks me what I'm doing. Me being the responsible CC diplomat that I am, I eagerly show him the whole site and what it entails. He snickers through my entire presentation. When I'm done, I ask him why he's laughing. He responds, and I quote:

"You're playing a kid's game."

Figuring this to be the opinion of someone who had never played Risk or its equivalent, I ask why he thinks it's a kid's game. He proceeds to tell me that no one over the age of 10 should be playing board games, and that it makes it even more "nerdy" that I'm doing so on the computer. Needless to say, I knew I wouldn't get anything through to him, and didn't feel the need to justify my playing the game, so I just went about my business.

Now, I'm not looking for sympathy from anyone here, because I'm a confident person. I was just wondering if there were other people here at CC that have had other run-ins with this type of person, i.e. someone who sees Risk and other board games as child's play?

Risk is awesome.
Doesn't make you immature. But playing board games online doesn't exactly qualify you as "manly man", either.
Just forget about him.

I guess my real point of this thread was to vent some steam about how frustrating ignorant people can be. The guy at work is actually a good guy, and we get along pretty well, so that's not a problem. I just hate how some people can't see past their way of life.

I know plenty of people who think that playing board games is beneath them. I for one love playing. Not just conquer club. I have a group of guys who we get together 2-3 times a month and play all sorts of games from the lenghty (7 Ages, History of the World, Successors, King Maker etc.) to the hour variety (Ticket to Ride, Colessium, Carcassone, Pirate's Cove, etc.)

I'm afraid to come out of the risk closet in fear of being called a geek.

If playing Risk and Monopoly and Carcasonne and all the other board games that "real men" find geeky, then I guess I'm a geek. Embrace it, Scott. It's the only way to find true happiness.

lol, if anyone watches lost, john locke also gets ridiculed for playing a risk like game...

anywho... risk is not kiddy... gw bush should have played this game, cuz then he'd realize bombarding the middle east would have been smarter than sending in a pitiful number of armies to a place and just fighting back and forth for it...

Man, half the population is below average IQ, probably 80% of that half will ridicule people smarter than them.
Im making numbers up but you get the point.
He's ignorant, you are smarter.
He probably watches TV and movies quite often. That sure doesnt exercise the brain much.

EDIT: like my buddy, he keeps referring to me as alwasy being in fornt of the PC.
On the Pc i do everything, play games, read, watch movies etc etc. (i ride bikes, play soccer adn lots more while not in front of PC)
He sits his ass down all evening and watches movie she already saw, and often passes out on the couch.Does nothing else
Who's the (fat) nerd?

is this supposed to be a joke about maturity and how players of conquerclub are immature and thus are children and thus have bedtimes?

If it takes you an hour to play carcassone, you're not playing with enough people/sets. Four hours minimum with the people and sets I play with. :)

However, this definitely doesn't win me manly man points... cos I'm a woman.

Next time someone goes on about hunting and suchlike, remind said person that s/he has a gun, deer calls to attract animals, and all manner of other gear. When they can take down an eight-point buck with their bare hands, then I'll be impressed with the manly-man accomplishment. Not until.

That's more likely the case. Your coworker, upon your presentation of the site, began to feel inferior because looking at the game he probably had a difficult time making sense of the maps and gameplay. He ridiculed you to draw attention away from the fact that he would get pwned by you in a game, and that's why he put it down.

So, don't worry about him. If he gives you grief about it, challenge him to a game.

Even if they were (which I neither confirm nor deny), so what? A little bit of child's play keeps us all young. No need for anyone to be mature absolutely ALL of the time, heh.
