Galapogos Ilse -bonus start

I am currently in a tourney that encompasses all maps on CC, we just started onto the new maps, and I have noticed that the new Galapogos Ilse map, starts you with a negative bonus, and there is 13 men to go through ( in some areas) over three territories b4 you get a positive one. Is this a huge mistake, or an intentional design ?
I would be interested in hearing what people thought of this.

I see this as a potentially harmful map, that will rely on the dice being cooperative for the first few turns, making skill a non-factor. I know some people love Doodle earth assassin, and that is strictly a luck of the dice game. Is this another attempt at a non skill map?
Perhaps I am missing something obvious on this map.
Thoughts and tips would be appreciated.

P.S. Please do not lock this again, I am generally interested, in peoples general thoughts on this new game.
:D :D 8-)

why?

if anywhere this should be merged with the map thread or moved to discussion.

My opinions:
someone got a +9 on round 2, just because of dice, the game was over by round 3, hardly fair

Please post this in the map specific thread in the foundry, thanks. Locked.

if you would've actually listened to what the mod said and posted (or at least looked) at the map thread in Final Forge, you'd see that they're discussing changes to the map.

lock it up

Yeah wll no harm done. But they are discussing it! As usual the map maker (cairn's) is very open to all peoples ideas and suggestions! However I do feel that maps need play testing before being put out to the general public!

I think my main concern here and focus is the seemingly increased amount of maps that are being put into public play, that are very much 'luck of the dice' orientated.
We have the AoR maps that rely heavily on dice rolls, as well as doodle and now these new maps have at least 3 out of the last 7 , that are all " luck of the dice ".
I am curious as to why so many maps of this caliber are being quenched and put into public play, do people no longer wish to play against skilled opponents? , Instead rely on winning because of a good drop and lucky die?
Seems the challenge is being slowly squeezed out of the game.

And I'm glad you are bringing this information to everyones attention, without having to be foundry regular, because that place moves more slowly than a Woolworth employee.

different strokes for different folks

I don't think the AOR maps are luck based. Just a different strategy. These maps are not my bag either, but of the new maps so far, the only ones I think are 'luck based' are Luxembourg because it's so small and ToG because the gameplay has a couple flaws. All the other ones are fine. A couple of them might be on the smaller side (Egypt Upper and Lower) but they seem to play well for games with less players.

There's tons of maps of all styles coming out of the foundry. It is true that of the current quenched and soon to be quenched, most of them are not of the standard style, but the majority of maps in the main foundry are of the standard style. So, saying, "the challenge is being slowly squeezed out of the game" is quite ignorant.

NO lux is big enough to elim luck, though all games are luck; just a point of order. Basically if you get bad dice first round in lux, sit and wait, just a little smaller.

Doodle Assassin is not a complete luck game however.

I managed to win at least 40% of mine, KG and skillerman said they nearly made 50% when playing them.

Considering the average win% should be 16.66%, obviously some people are doing somethings wrong. However when I was winning 2/5 of them I was going negative points so I couldn't gain there, as everyone in those games are sergeants and below.

Little wrong there Fabled, you've won 24% of your 8-man doodle earth assassin speed games. (Won 12 from 49(24%))

(KG = KingofGods?) If so, then hes won 20% on the same settings (Won 59 from 292(20%))

Skillerman has won 2%, (Won 1 from 44(2%))

All of these is 8-man doodle earth assassin speed only, i took 8-man becuase thats what everyone is thinking is pure luck.
(Checked for just assassin doodle speed, without setting a number, and the % on fabeld and kingofgods went up 1%.)
(also checked without speed, the % is still the same)

Sorry for being a besserwisser, hehe :P

A little sidenote that was.

ON TOPIC

Yes, Galapagos suck. It would probably work out great if luggers wasnt connected to eachother and that Reef 3 didnt have only 5 neutrals to grab one.

Also, the -1 in the reef is just stupid if you ask me. Get bad luck first round, and it may take very long to get out of there..

According to the work my staff and I have done with The Foundry Newsletter, there's a slew of classic mechanics maps in the works. We release every other Sunday (this Sunday upcoming is our next issue), and you can hit up the headlines on the homepage to see if anything new has gotten into the works.
