A Classic Rant

To be honest, both maps looked like bunk, complete bunk. That's why there wasn't more support for one over the other. I'm horrible at making maps, so any mapmaker can feel free to come in here and tell me to shut the hell up if they feel the need. I'm not criticizing, necessarily, just saying that perhaps more time should be taken to flesh out a new Classic map. It's supposed to be the flagship map for the site, right? If so, then I don't get why you'd only take a few days to create something new. And then, when a new idea is created, you offer us that and the filler shape map that was used in the original Classic's stead.

I, for one, play a lot of Classic. I'm dealing with its current state in the hopes that something wonderful is created to take its place. Please don't let me down, founders. You're all spectacular mapmakers, and I have complete faith that you can and will offer us a map that will blow our minds.

I have to agree with this post. I only got on this site in the first place because of the classic maps, I don't really play anything else. I guess I'm reliving my childhood, when I played a lot of risk. but this new map really takes the fun out of the game. I know there is the looming threat of a lawsuit, but there must be some middle ground. like I've posted elsewhere, no one should be able to copyright the world. maybe some of the shapes of the countries can be changed, some of the names, the colors can be changed, eliminate the big whale south of africa, etc. but give us a real map of the world to play on.

I'm finishing up all my current games but doubt I'll start any new ones until this gets resolved somehow.

thanks for listening.

Thank you for your feedback, there just isn't enough EXTRA support to change over to this new board at this time.

Incredible.

First produce a piece of work that gets almost zero support. Then make a deal about people voting for a different version. Then, when that vote closes with over half showing their disgruntlement at the first option lack decides there isn't enough support.

Maybe I am stupid, but over half generally means more than under half. But then we are in that looking glass world of lack.

I suppose it would be too much trouble, what with the weekened coming, to offer the second as an option on the board, see how many players go for that rather than the so called 'classic' we have now

This didn't break any of the forum guidelines really, but since lack locked the thread and twill said posts would be deleted, I'm guessing they didn't want threads about it either.

Sorry guys.

If they tell me otherwise then I'll go ahead and unlock this :)

So we are given a vote, the result of which is ignored.

then when people start complaining about it we get the thread locked.

Now where was that statement by Twill....oh yes here it is:

We are involving the community as much as possible

Yeah ok Twill.....whatever.

This is me telling whoever locked my thread that they can lick my balls.. you know, before this one is locked.

Pretty classy of me, eh?

Alright, unlocked, discussion is allowed in this topic..they just didn't want it in the other one.

As much as I like that idea, I don't think it would be plausible since the games wouldn't finish in just a weekend so they both would have to stay up longer than that, which they probably wouldn't want...it would just be really confusing for a lot of users.

Why can't we see a picture of the other option (it got removed)? I never got to vote and I'd like to know what I missed.

I think you all underestimate the intelligence of many of the people here.

Oh wait, of course, yes, we live in a world where everyone has to work to the level of the student who sits at the back of the class reading the textbook upside down.

Their intelligence, no...it's common sense that I'm worried about.

Besides, I just don't think the admins will do it because putting it up and pulling it down a couple days later just spells disaster...

You didn't miss anything. They gave us the option of the map the way it is now, and some sort of map with square-shaped territs that had artists names as the names of the territs. I think Lack must've seen the mistake in offering one horrible filler for another and decided to let the competition take its course.

But isn't this exactly what they were going to do? They just put up the shape map a few days ago, then they wanted to try and replace it with Option B. Maybe that's why they pulled the poll? If so, why not just say that instead of making up some excuse like "Oh, there's not enough support."

Oh do come on. This isn't rocket science.

1) You put up both options for about a week.
2) You close off one option available to start after that period of time, allowing any games in progress to continue being played out.
3) You have a full analysis available to see how many were started on each and by how many players.

Surely this is better than a quick 'on the fly' poll which is shut down before, it seems, many had a chance to see what was there. Added to which, the result was ignored anyway!

I said I agreed with you, and that I liked the idea. I just don't think that they will do it, that's just my opinion...I don't think they will.

It was locked and then unlocked...I did both.

And lets try keeping the ball licking out of GD :)

Merging with the other thread (lets keep it civil as it has been so far or it will be moved to FW).

well, i think you are all freaking out by the word permanent. my understand is, this is going to be the place holder for classic, until the contest in the foundry is complete. however, the map that is the place holder will be permanent so the data/points/scores/ranks, etc... aren't screwed up for the entire site. now, this is just my understanding of the situation and is not an official stance. please correct me if i am wrong. black jesus has spoken.-0

Pengui, the ball-licking comment was pre-unlock. I was feeling a little steamed when the thread was locked without a stated reason. Now, back to our civil discussion.

owen, my understanding of Twill saying "permanent" was that the option chosen by the public would supercede the contest. But, you're probably right. It was probably just going to be a placeholder until the contest was over. My feeling in that regard is why not just keep the current placeholder until the contest is over? Why offer us another and make it sound like the one we choose will stand forever? Then, when one is overwhelmingly chosen over another, they take the poll down without letting the majority of the site vote? Just weird. Where's Lack to explain things?

Rectangle retardation was still better than octagon agony. This situation was handled even worse than I could ever imagine.

Obviously they can't help us - maybe we should help ourselves.

To be honest, I have to agree with most of the posts in this thread. Looks like the crisis gets from bad to worst each time an action is taken in hurry without thinking.

Yes, I don't know each detail of what is happening, neither I want to tell someone else how they need to administrate their business. But I guess that like most people here I developed some care for the site (plus let's face it, is one of the best online strategy games site and it would be a pain to have to look for a similar site if it was closed) so that is why I am a little concerned to what is happening.

My humble advice is, take your customers and customers, and not like kids. They are the ones who have the power to pay after all, and you need them. Even if you really believe they are kids instead of customers.

I do know THOTA has an idea for a new map, reffered to as the Mondriaan map. Its just a design, maybe one of the mapmakers can use it to realize a new map for conquerclub. Just one thing, THOTA claims the copyright of the map, so if you wanna use it you have to put 'Designed by THOTA' on the map somewhere, hehehehehehe.

Don't act like Fruit didn't influence the situation, Pengui. You know he did. The majority of the credit for the new change goes to him, if you ask me.
