GRID V3.1 & Poll

Me and crazymilkshake5 were thinking about a Risk map based on the scrabble board! It's very similar to Crossword and Conquer4 in many aspects, as well as a very simplistic fun outline!

THEME: A gridded board with words as bonuses.

TERRITORY COUNT: 225 (144 normal territs, 77 letters used to make words, 4 Double Bonuses DB's)

ALL NORMAL TERRITS ARE NEUTRAL 1's. OR OWNED BY PLAYERS AT DROP.
ALL LETTERS ARE NEUTRAL 2's.
ALL DB's ARE NEUTRAL 10's.

BONUSES: 7 letter words = +10 deploy per. There are 2 on the map.
6 letter words = +8 deploy per. There are 2 on the map.
5 letter words = +6 deploy per. There are 5 on the map.
4 letter words = +4 deploy per. There are 4 on the map.
3 letter words = +3 deploy per. There are 2 on the map.
2 letter words = +2 deploy per. There are 5 on the map.
DB's = double every bonus held, THIS DOES NOT DOUBLE ARMIES EARNED BY TERRITS.

(Example: I hold a DB with no letter bonuses and 14 territs, I still receive 4 armies. Example 2: I hold a 3 letter word and a 4 letter word and DB with 16 territs, I receive 3 + 4 (letter bonuses) X 2 (DB) + 5 (territs) = 19 armies.)

ALSO, a player can hold more than 1 DB, but bonuses will still ONLY be doubled.

Normal bonus for territs, +1 for every 3 after 9. No less then 3 per turn.

ATTACKS: 8 way attacks. You can attack any adjacent territ including diagonally. (Like conquer4)

GAME PLAY:
Each player starts with 18 of the blank territs.
Players battle for words to add to their troop count.
Basic elimination, eliminate all your opponents territories and win the game.

OVERALL PLAN:
1. Continue to adjust map details through discussion as well improve graphics and colors.
2. Add shadows for armies to be placed on maps.
3. Have workable proto-type (with bugs brought up in discussion resolved) ready to be stamped.
4. Draft Stamp (hopefully)
5. Resolve any game play issues.
6. Game play stamp. (hopefully)
7. Complete Graphical Design.
8. Graphics Stamp. (hopefully)
9. XML Coding/testing.
10. XML Stamp. (hopefully)
11. BETA.

Please be completely honest with what you would like us to change!! The latest version of GRID should be posted below by my partner in crime crazymilkshake5. Let's discuss what to change and make a winner!

If you get permission from Hasbro to use the Scrabble name, then why not.

However, given that Hasbro have a bit of a reputation for aggressively protecting their brands, then I'd suggest that this is an idea not worth pursuing any further.

Bases= +3 auto drop
DL= +2 deploy
TL= +3 deploy
O= objective. (Objective can attack bases and is 20 neutral)

Suitable map for 8 players as well as less.

You need to upload the image to an image hosting website, such as photobucket or imageshack. Then you can get the direct link and link to that. Then your picture will show up here. Hope that helps.

Other board games have been tried before to be turned into CC maps, with mixed results... Conquer4 and Pachisi! are the one's with any notable success. Monopoly, Chess, and a few others have always seemed to come up short.

It's a novel idea, but get your gameplay in order. Is every grid block gonna be a territory? Scrabble... is a crossWORD game. Where's the words? Tiles? the racks? How bout the tile bag? There's a lot to figure out, and honestly it'll be a lot of work. My firm suggestion is to fill out a big hunk of the board with various words with certain scores and crossing certain bonus squares for enhanced bonuses. The words become your 'continents.' The rest of the board can either be open space or just background with no territories at all.

All up to you kids, good luck.

things to fix (graphically):

1. make grid numbers white
2. make letters smoother
3. put "made by xxxxxxxx"

i don't support this.

Feudal War is better than Feudal Epic because each starting position is unique. Realms 2 & 3 are great because a different strategy is required for each starting position which is altered because of the possible starting positions of the other players.

your board being the same whether rotated 90 degress, 180 degrees or 270 degrees is boring.

I agree that the starting positions won't be original from each other. I believe this reduces the luck in the drop and makes game play more enjoyable. It would minimize drop wins (like sanctuary in aor3) and leave the game up to strategy and dice.

looks good so far,and i can see the gameplay style your going after, like you said artic map in general, stick to grid drop scrabble completly out of the name in any form, you might put in blanks that are impassibles that you have to go around to make it to the center, with just one square open on the four sides.

I like that idea. It would cause more conflicts trying to enter the objective area.

1. learn to use a proper graphics software (photoshop/gimp)
2. the map is symmetrical hence it will suck

This was done on gimp.... and is there something we could add to the symmetry that would make it 'suck' less?

if you're using gimp then you need to brush up on your skills. natty has some tutorials posted in the foundry on top of thousands of others that can be found on the internet.

as for the symmetry there's no way to make it suck less. symmetry simply sucks. if you're keen on keeping the scrabble theme then perhaps a cool idea would be to have various letters scattered across the board and give bonuses for holding certain words.
also create multiplier zones that once held double/triple any continent bonuses that you have. it would get rid of the symmetry and be truer to the scrabble theme.
