show: Version 1

I am redoing the map currently.

New thematic/gameplay idea:
To better expand on the theme of Austin billing itself the Live Music Capital of the World, I think it would be cool to have a "Unite the band and book some gigs" victory condition. Strategically placed on the map would be a lead singer, guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer and manager, along with various nightclubs. Holding all the elements of the band along with a percentage of the nightclubs for one round will be the victory condition.

Perhaps in order to help make the victory condition a bit easier to achieve, have each band member/manager held be a +1, and maybe something like +2 for every 3 nightclubs held (not sure on this, need to see how many nightclubs will be on the map first).

To be done:
Better background.
Fix the river, make it look decent.
Fix bridges, make them look like bridges.
General graphics revamp.

30 something views, and no comments at all...

Wow, it must really suck.

I didn't think it was that bad for being a first draft...

Not that, but you did say you where buggering off for a few months. When you get back post another draft and bump the thread.

I'm always game for a good city map but this is too rough to really say much so far. I guess one comment would be that there are an awful lot of territories in some of those regions (i.e. 13 in North). I'd either split the regions more or condense the territories.

Fair enough. I'll post a more polished draft once I'm back.

Haha, yeah about that. I just drew the territs in for the sake of having a workable map for now. Those aren't the territs that will appear in the map. Honestly, those probably aren't even the bonus regions that will appear in the final map. Everything will be reworked once I'm back and have done some actual research into the neighborhood names and structures. I'd like to make it as accurate as possible.

Thanks for the comments so far though. I'm not really sure why I posted this now, since I'll be leaving. I guess I was just excited.

That's weird. It was working, but it's not now. Hmmm, I'll have to check my imageshack account and see if there is something up there.

Edit: Hmm, strange. Everything is fine on imageshack, the image is still there, no problems. That's weird that it just stopped showing the image.

Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Maybe I'll try a different site.

2nd Edit: Hmm, uploading it to photobucket and linking to that image seemed to work. Strange.

Sometimes some of imageshacks servers go down, it helps to upload it again and hope the new upload gets hosted on a different server.

Ah. I had no idea. That makes sense though. Thanks, I'll try that.

it is a little rough sketch you've made, the city's design seems like an interesting map, the background I'm not so crazy about, but I think there is something to build on.
I think you should try to highlight what Austin stand for as your theme for the map, try take a look at what ohter mapmakers have done on city maps, not to copy them but find your one style.

It's a very rough sketch. The background can be changed easily. I'd like to find something similar to what I have there but not quite so intrusive...maybe adjusting the opacity of it may help as well.

As far as theme, well, I have some thoughts on that. Austin calls itself the "Live Music Capital of the World" because of the very vibrant and active community of musicians around here and all the nightclubs, etc. where one can pretty much always find live music. Now, I'm not really sure how to incorporate that into a CC map, but it could make for an interesting theme. But again, I kind of want to keep the gameplay pretty close to classic. Maybe some collectable bonuses...but nothing too fancy.

Some other thought's I had were using the interstate and the highways as impassables, using the underpasses as the only places they could be crossed. Alternatively, I could have the interstate on there as actual territories, but you can only attack one way. I.E. the northbound side of I-35 can only attack the territ to the north of it. Southbound side could only attack territs south of it. To go from Northbound side of 35 to Southbound side you would have to use an exit to get off the interstate, cross the underpass, and get back on.

Oh, and some good news here. It appears I will be around for a while longer than I anticipated, so I will be able to start working on this now...well, in between my time out job hunting.

So, any thoughts on the above?

I think any Austin map that doesn't go into more detail on the 4th avenue (or whatever happening street it was) scene would not be maximizing the feel of Austin. I say that as a person that has not been to Austin but everywhere else in Texas and constantly heard about it.

Ah, 6th street! Yes, if the main theme of the map is live music, then it would be a sin to not include 6th street. And I guess 4th street as well. Basically, they are both big night club scenes, the main difference is that 4th street is more the adult crowd, 6th street is more the college/ 20 something crowd.

What did you base your territory divisions on? It looks like you just drew lines to break things up evenly. Will there be names for each territory in the future? It would be so very dull to keep it all directional.

I did just draw lines in randomly. It was just to get a working draft to show people what it would (sort of) look like. And yes, each terit will have a proper name. Unfortunately, after a bit of research, the bonuses may have to stay directionally named. But the territs will take the names and shapes of the various neighborhoods.

Basically the whole map will be redone. This was just so people could get an idea of how it would look.

I don't know how good you are with art work, but yea I'd make those two streets part of the map. Even if you aren't too great, you could do something like the Chicago map did with the rail points. I think it'd be fun to throw in popular attractions though. I like maps that are individualized rather than the prototypical territories. I find that to be rather bland and a dime a dozen.

I pretty much suck with art work, but I'm trying to learn.

One idea I've been toying around with, which I think would work great with the live music theme (but in my opinion, would possibly take away from the city map aspect of it), is to have a "Unite the band and book some gigs" victory condition. Have a lead singer, guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer, and keyboardist(?) scattered throughout the map, and have specific night clubs labelled on the map along 6th street and 4th street. The objective would be to hold all of the band and a set number of the nightclubs to win. Of course you could still win by simply killing everybody else. But it would give it one hell of a theme.

Any thoughts on that? Anyone?

The unite the band theme is a brilliant idea. Maybe throw in a manager, a record company, a fan club president, etc and spread them out so that it's not too easy of an objective. Also with the 4th/6th street, I think it'd be relatively easy to do even w/o great art skills. See the chicago map. But even if you don't have great art skills, there are people like Bison King that can draw you a few icons and you can then put em in there yourself.

After thinking about it, it might be pretty hard to focus on 4th and 6th street. With the map focusing on the whole city of Austin, the streets themselves would be tiny and have hardly any room to put nightclubs on them. To get an idea, they would basically occupy the Downtown bonus area and parts of the central bonus area.

It seems like it might be a better idea to spread the clubs/bars around the city, just like the band members.

I think its an exelent idea to make the thems for a music city map, how it can be done is up to you, but maby I can push you in a direction, you can take a look at my Copenhagen city map (commercial  ) not to cope what I have done but its a way to keep it simple, what you always must have in mind, its the gameplay thats most importend and not the geographical accuracy of the map, ofcourse you need to place stuff where it natural belong for not to have to many complains, find a gameplay and build your map around it.

looking 4ward to your next update :)

First of all it takes some patient ;) foundry mods are volunteers, and the progress can be slow  but do not doubt that they will take a look at your map soon.

My personal opinion is that you do the remake and post it first, then from that to decide if your draft is solid.

Well, I would say the graphics need a big overhaul.

And if you're going to call this a live music map, You might want to include some stages or something, because outside of the title, the map has nothing to do with live music. I'd recommend that you take a look at other city maps in the works like Copenhagen, and see how the map incorporates the culture of the city in with it. Then figure out what the culture of Austin is and include it in the map.
