Obama's Newtown Speech: The Beginning of Secession?

Postby CreepersWiener on Sun Dec 16, 2012 9:06 pm

After listening to Obama's speech at the Newtown Vigil, I couldn't help but think about all the ultraconservatives that will be pushing towards secession.

Obama said he would use the power of his office to keep children safe and to prevent another one of these tragedies from ever happening again. I hope I am wrong about this, but the country is so stiffly divided that the attempt at secession now is a real possibility.

The question is: Will it happen tomorrow or will it take more time?

Ultraconservatives (and Phattscotty), will you be willing to secede from the United States if the 2nd amendment is taken away or altered?

Personally, yes. That is, if passports are still legal. I won't be here for the civil war Obama is going to start

"We can't tolerate this any more," Obama told families during an interfaith service at a high school in Newtown. "These tragedies must end, and to end them we must change ... We can't accept events like this as routine."

The president did not offer specific policies, but said in the coming weeks he will use the powers of his office to address ways to prevent such attacks in the future.

What ways would you assume/expect Obama to "prevent" these shootings in the future?

The firearm issue will be touchy, but I do see possibility in using technology to make schools safer. They already have houses and offices that only open for designated people. How hard would it be to use the same technology on schools? There is also face recognition technology that would be able to warn a computer system of an "unannounced" or "unrecognized" individual. Also, metal detectors at the doors.

We do it at the airports, why not at our schools?

As far as I am aware, this school in Newtown had just metriculated that tech. There was a buzzer system that was intended only for designated people. It didn't work. I hear the gunman just went through the window....

So the answer is "not that hard"

Let the idiots secede. They need so much federal aid, I wonder how they'll do on their own...

Also, we can keep manufacturing the guns up here and just sell them to the idiots down south. It'll be like the new new Mexico.

If that is indeed the case, it didn't work because there was no perimeter set. They figured the doors were good enough. Face recognition cameras put up around the perimeter would have warned the school of an unintended intruder.

This being said, of course, sets the bar a little bit higher on the "police state" meter; but in light of current (and past) events, I don't see how else Obama will be able to change the situation.

Thusly, my concern that libertarian-aligned nutjobs will want to secede as soon as possible.

Or perhaps, the answer is dealing with the gun problem. To be fair though, I should point out this about the way that the media treats these stories:

If the president thinks these attacks are routine, then he must truly be delusional. However, what IS routine is the massive number of young (black) people who get killed on Chicago streets by gang violence. And that's in a city where guns are supposedly banned. Yet those routine killings mean nothing to him, and he's FROM Chicago!

They are seemingly routine, under Obama. 5 out of the top 10 massacres in US history are on Obama's watch, all in his first term.

I'm sure the deaths don't mean "nothing" to Obama. How did you arrive at that conclusion.

However, comparing hardened mostly adult criminals killing each other to a deranged man shooting innocent defenseless 5 year olds is not a fair comparison.

I think you are the delusional one.

Guns aren't banned in Chicago. Don't go Phatscotty on us NS.

Only because the Supreme Court is actually following the Constitution and overturning their bans.

yuh Symmetry, ya stick. The most recent data is all from a timeframe where the guns were banned. We don't have the data yet for post-ban, mainly because it just changed.

The homicide results from Chicago, the worst in America, resulted at a time the ban was in effect. Stop being a stick!

Guns were never banned in Chicago. Ownership was restricted. If you're going to call that a situation "where guns are supposedly banned", then they''re banned everywhere in the US.

Your argument is either false, or fatuous. Which is it?
