true, but I still think 90% of posters here are doing it from a democrats/republicans point of you and I think that the republican point of view is extremist almost anywhere in the world. Each time there is a US election, I see polls regarding who the rest of the world would vote for if they were americans, and it's always like 75% for the democrat candidate.

I've been trying to say this for ages here,it's not just politics, every topic is dominated by a US perspective even though it is an international forum,to the extent it is the default position. When THE economy,THE dollar,THE constitution are mentioned,we know which country is being discussed even though many other countries have them...

I think that is because you will find that the loudest voices on the forum speak about US issues. There are plenty of Europeans on here who do this and Americans as well.

The biggest reason is probably because the US is so huge and our main media doesn't discuss world events. Most Americans probably watch local news, this would suggest that most Americans probably don't know much about the opposite coast or the middle of their own country unless they live there or it is a natural disaster on a large scale.

well, like the football topic. basically europeas and americans have both created a thread called "football (real)", and for 95% of the world population football is what some call soccer. Americans come regularly on the football thread to say the title is deceptive...

Anyway, I think it's quite funny because I remember during the US elections a french journalist made a little test. He went to see 10 american local news anchormen (covering the US elections) to ask them who is the actual french president. Not a single one of them was able to give the correct answer, some even answered Mitterand who died 20 years ago. A couple answered Sarkozy, close enough (he was until 6 month ago...).
I mean it's kind of ok for an average american not to know all the world leaders, but anchormen, seriously? the elections were 6 month ago. Not like asking who is the slovakian president (no offense to slovkas), It's expecting them to know the top 5-10 leaders. Probably good as well to know a little about mexican and canadian politics, the next door neighbours...
but which came first (chicken or egg question) the lazy american only interested in trivial next door news, or the incompetent journalist?
Hopefully you guys have the NYT, the washington post, newsweek and other quality news press.

Yeah, I'm sure a Moldovan TV station did the same thing in France and got offended that no French journalist knew their president. Everyone hopes they're living at the center of history.

Lol I gave Slovaks as an example unless you didn't notice. There is over 200 countries in the world and obviously no one knows about all of them. There are some recurrent world leader yearly conventions successively called the G5, G7, G8, G14 and G20 which you obviously know of, and France is one of the main 5 since it was created, so yes, 100% of local news anchormen unable to answer this simple question proves there is some kind of problem with the average american and international topics. Moldova is not influecial worldwide nor on a european level nor on an eastern european level.

Yeah. No one likes to get the rude awakening that they're living in Moldova on a Wednesday afternoon. Everyone always thinks they're sitting in the car at the tip of the roller coaster.

LOL, no you're not. You support the Big War, Big Corporation, Surveillance State candidates. That's not a "far-left liberal." I've pretty much always pegged you and Player as institutional party-machine Democrats. Not hippies/free thinkers/progressives. Just Republicans whose advertising/marketing program is targeting a different demographic so uses slightly different music in their :30 national TV spots.

There's nothing wrong with that, though, as long as you own it.

That's how politics work. You vote for the person who's views are closest to yours. If I had voted for Sid for president then my vote would have essentially been a throwaway vote for Romney. And Obama was a better choice than Romney. On the local level things work differently than on the national level, and I can support a candidate who's positions are aligned much closer to mine.

EDIT: You build a political movement from the ground up, not the top down.

I still don't think you understand the fiscal cliff legislation. Also, what Saxi said, but he says it way better than I could.

I'm not even sure what we're talking about. I know that I said something about how parasitic corporations should pay high taxes, but that wasn't a comment about the legislation, that was a continuation of phatscotty's comment... or something... but it wasn't about the legislation. I'll just say right now that I'm sorry for whatever confusion, but this time I haven't even read the legislation in question. I've read a few opinion pieces, but that's all. Now that I'm not admin-ing anymore I have been reading a much broader range of stuff, and I'm a lot happier for it.

I find it funny how often people come into this thread, point out the problem with the liberal/conservative split, and say we should use a more accurate spectrum when I've mentioned over and over throughout the thread that everyone knows it isn't accurate, we know there are better political charts, but we're discussing it here because everyone uses it anyway.

Btw, that's an interesting chart all the same.

Saying thegreekdog is moderate is like saying the Nazis were socialists. Regardless of slapping the label on themselves, they just aren't.

point being: do you think it's normal that in your country 10/10 local news anchormen are so self centered that they don't know who lead countries such as germany, france, uk or even next door neighbours such as canada and mexico? Do you realize that american people are very deficient in geopolitics? Is that a good thing?

can you name me the president of mexico elected last month without googleing? there's a world out there. W Bush didn't even have a freakin passport when he got elected, never went abroad and obviously knew shit about anything outside of texas. He made a fool out of americans for 8 years, hopefully you now have Obama that is witty and educated.
