Hyde Park

Postby jonesthecurl on Fri Jan 18, 2013 11:04 pm

Just returned from seeing Hyde Park on Hudson, after reading VERY mixed reviews. I can see why it's not to everybody's taste, but personally I was very impressed. Don't expect anything rude, thrilling, or violent, but do expect some extremely fine acting.

yes.

I saw Moscow on the Hudson a few years back. Is that close enough?

My mother-in-law saw it. She is borderline psychotic about her love and admiration for FDR. So...

It was a rounded portrait of him. You could see why people loved and admired him, but he was a bit of a git in private.
The film pretty much avoided any political standpoints.

Good to hear, but it got a 5.7/10 on imdb... but Bill Murray plays FDR, which is interesting.

The story of the love affair between FDR and his distant cousin Margaret "Daisy" Suckley, centered around the weekend in 1939 when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited upstate New York.

Sounds very hoighty-toighty and difficult to sit through.

Is the quality of acting really worth it? Are there any other selling points or details about the acting which you'd care to share?

Well, I thought it was going to be too slow, and I absolutely can see why people would think that - but for me, it was simply convincing as a portrait of various people at an interesting point. I particularly like the bit where FDR is talking to the king. The king says "Oh, damn this stutter!" and FDR says "oh damn these legs !... You know, nobody ever mentions them."
