NOOOOOooooooooo!!!!! (My greatest fear.)

I'm definitely not into the arcadey types, as you surmise. But surely you're not including Myst V in that, at least?

I didn't even see Myst on the list. What a splendidly brilliant game.

I don't know. Making it more like Baldur's Gate 2 in terms of the mechanics and plotting seems like a good idea. The sequel was far superior.

Yeah, I just finally picked up Mass Effect, and that's a fairly accurate depiction for how I felt about it.

I played it for a couple of days, and it seemed like it could be a very good game for someone who likes that type...but I don't think I'll be going back to it as it wasn't really my preference.

Mass Effect
Small learning curve for anyone coming from FPS gameplay. I kept trying to reload and chucked nades instead.
The Witcher
Heard Good things about it Never played it.
Morrowind
Deep Story line -Takes forever to complete. (Don't forget to break in to the tower in the first town! )
Oblivion
Nice Intro, Sorta got myself lost in what I was supposed to do however.
Skyrim
Never Played
Dragon Age: Origins (which comes first?)
Do Origins First, you'll use your character here to play awakening.
Dragon Age: Awakening (which comes first?)
Nice Graphics, more abilities Rogues become insane DPS if done right.
Assassin's Creed
Not Really an RPG in the typical sense. Not extremely bad when it comes to gameplay.

Yes, this was an aspect of Drakensang that I GREATLY enjoyed. The party abilities were very meaningful.

Good info on the others - thanks!

Thats probably why you didn't like Mass Effect as much either. I kept finding things I wanted to unlock, had the Aquarian, with a higher lvl tech skill, but couldn't use that tech skill at all..... :?

so I'm big into RPGs too, but I also really like the 'action adventure' games (yeah, the 1st two games I ever bought were Legend of Zelda and the original Final Fantasy) of your list the only ones I've played were Morrowind, Oblivion, Jade Empire: Special Edition, and Assassin's Creed. Morrowind and Oblivion level up your character kinda like DnD, except it's your skills you're leveling up, and pushing certain skills that are based on a stat let you boost that stat higher (IE leveling your heavy armor skill helps you level endurance, hand to hand levels strength). Other than that the battles are hack and slash, and while there's a plot, there's so much else to do (if you choose to) aside from said plot you may never get around to it (the entire elder scrolls series is like this, including Skyrim from what I've heard, and the more recent the game, the more likely you are to loose the plot). Jade Empire is less hack and slash, though still real time battles instead of turn based... and the plot's on a rail... if you've ever played Knights of the Old Republic, it's made by the same people and plays very much like it (right down to the light side vs dark side). Assassins Creed, as stated by quite a few people is not RPG, but closer to the action adventure type... if that's not your thing, this is not for you certainly. All the games I enjoyed immensely, so take it for what it's worth.

would for all that i dont dostar wars anymore say that the KOTOR games were well made, easy to learn, and fun to play. I know you probably don't have a problem with them Woodruff, so I'm just saying as Secular RPG's id give them 8/9 out of 10 on the RPG scale.

Morrowind- All around fun game, my favorite of the elder scrolls series. you can Levitate something I wish they didn't get rid of in the other ones. The most RPGish of the 3 modern elder scrolls games. It has the best story line but the game play can be difficult sometimes.
Oblivion- the transition from strictly RPG to building up game play and things to do to keep you occupied.
Skyrim- Modern, super fun and addicting but the storyline is too short IMO.

Dragon Age: Origins - A really fun game, it make you think a strategize on how to take stuff out.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey- I played this one a while back but didn't find it that entertaining. You'd likely only do 1 play-through that takes 30hours at the most. The story line is good, though you do spend a lot of time talking, but combat system is not the best.

I have yet to find one.... Considering the fact that most RPG's are made by companies like EA, Microsoft, Bioware ect. which will constantly change what they put into a game to be the most politically correct, which is for the most part not things I agree with, I currently don't have one. I'll FYI you when I do though.

Skyrim is an open world RPG. Lots to explore and discover and do, but once you get to a certain point, few things are challenging to you. The DLC adds to it, and on the PC, there are a TON of mods that add to it as well.

Dragon Age Origins is good, really good story and characters, somewhat open world, with some good DLC. Awakening is the DLC/extension or whatever its called.

Mass Effect, yeah, I can see where you're coming from, but ME2 is a great game and ME3 (minus the ending) is also really good, and decisions from ME1 impact ME2, and decisions from both ME1 and ME2 impact the storyline in ME3. And the multiplayer isn't bad either (if you don't mind horde mode style gming).

Assassins Creed series are not RPG, but still really good. The first one is pretty repetitive after awhile, but the ones after it get better and better, and you don't HAVE to play the first one to get the 2nd and 3rd ones, but it does help with the story.

Also heard good things about The Witcher and its sequal, The Witcher 2 (by all accounts, 2 is better than 1).
"Eh, whatever."

No, I know you're a very religious individual. I just don't get the usage as it applies to RPGs. I mean, in almost every RPG I've played, you have the option of being "good" or "evil" (essentially). That first option seems right down your alley. <smile>

Fallout 1 and Fallout 2.

There's relatively no restraints in that game, so one can easily act as a god.

True, I'm usually the first option. However, if the game complies to my moral standards is another thing, but lets leave it at that so we don't derail your thread here. Even though I might be more than willing to. O:)

Woodruff wrote:Ok, I think I've finally avoiding diving into another computer-based
role-playing game long enough...it's time to start another up. So I've
got this bloody huge stack of games sitting here on my desk, and I'd
like some input as to the pros and cons of each from those of you who
have played them (also tell me if I'm mistaken and one isn't actually
an RPG):

Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale
Drakensang, the Complete Saga
Reckoning
Mass Effect
Legendary
The Witcher
Two Worlds
Myst V: End of Ages (I did like Myst and Riven)
Morrowind
Oblivion
Skyrim
Dragon Age: Origins (which comes first?)
Dragon Age: Awakening (which comes first?)
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
Jade Empire: Special Edition
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Rift
Battle Slots (it claims to be an RPG...weird)
Call of Juarez
Assassin's Creed
The Godfather II
Trine
Dungeon Siege
Dungeon Lords
Fate

Morrowind and Oblivion are great but very time-consuming. I started the Witcher but quit because my shitty computer wasn't really good enough to handle it. It was pretty good, though. Dragon Age: Origins was fun, the second one sucks. Two Worlds is utter shit and you should get rid of it. First Fable is fun. Assassin's Creed is dull. Mass Effect is a lot of fun, except all the resource gathering on planets gets a little old. Fate is a Diablo clone that's good for a few hours but it gets dull pretty quickly.

I played a (full) download of the first version of Fate back when it came out. It was your basic "kill the bad guys and get stuff" game. I enjoyed it, it had several little twists and quirks that made the play interesting even after several repeats. Wish I had gotten the disc. When my computer died, I lost the game.

I liked the concept of a human town with various different types of citizens.
