The bastardized french always gets me too. The border between New Brunswick and Maine is bad in some places. There's a French history through both places. One of those places pronounces the place names correctly, while the other does not (for example, cal-iss, rather than cal-ay, for Callais). Also, it's foe-yay, not foe-yer.

Here people are pretty much dicks towards things French from back a hundred years ago when the English speakers finally came out to takeover from the French speaking settlers. Who were much less militant toward the first nations people. There's pretty deep denial about the French settling here first.

The first link is right, although as it clearly states, it is just one of many dialects in Vietnam. The differences in these regional dialects is very drastic. Mostly this is in vocabulary and use, as the northern and southern dialects (as far as I know, the most common) have started to come closer to each other in their pronunciation and sounds. Granted, the dialect of the middle mountainous areas of Vietnam are ridiculous. As a non-native vietnamese speaker, I can understand maybe 1-5% of what they're saying, but I can usually get by based on context clues. Even my parents, one from the north and south respectively (neither communist, you fucks), have difficulty in understanding how the mountain people talk.

To the best of my understanding, the mountain dialect version of nguyen would sound like "ngueen", with a drop in tone at the end. so it would kinda sound like slowpoke was saying it.

And as for the second link, I've never heard a vietnamese person say nguyen in that manner. It sounds like an extraterrestrial is saying it.

Think about it for a second guys. Its one of the only co-ed groups you can join in high school and 90 % of the time were left alone and the school even gives bands rooms that you can be alone in. Im not saying its an orgy going on, just that if you know the right moves you can manipulate a lot of those stupid woodwind chicks into giving you bj's in the practice room during lunch.

So "manipulating" someone into having sex with you is your idea of a good time? Sounds kinda rapey to me.

Nah- he sounds like a guy who has learned about sex from a bunch of juvenile movies, is a bit afraid of actually watching pornography, and would be terrified if faced with a real live woman.

Yall are right. Im sure you get tons more sex than me from a variety of women.

One more piece of anecdotal evidence. =)

I have a good friend whose last name is Nguyen, and at first, when we asked her how to pronounce it, she refused. =)

Later, she gave in and said to pronounce it as "wen," but there's a subtle N there at the beginning, so generally we say "Nuhwen."

A buddy of mine whose mom is Vietnamese said they pronounced it as "Nuhwen" as well.

http://inogolo.com/pronunciation/Nguyen

Still, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese names are tough for foreigners to pronounce. I don't know how many times someone's repeated a name or a word to me, and I think I'm saying it just like they're saying it, only to be told I'm wrong. When I finally say it right, I can't really tell the difference between all the other times I mispronounced the words.

It's really pretty nuts. A human being who can fluently and accurately speak other languages is indeed a thing of beauty, particularly to this gwailo. =)

Nothing like being too stoned for sex, so instead settling for a bj only to discover you're too high for that too

I've heard it pronounced Gwen Wynn and Noyen. I'm not sure which is correct or if all are but I think it's probably Noyen.

Since it s vietnamese and one of the most used last names in france (simply because 80% of vietnamese here share this last name, a bit like park/kim for koreans) i think it is spelled in roman alphabet to correspond with french pronounciation.

"wen" or "win" are acceptable. "nu-wen" is also fine.

ideally, it's "ngwein" but the ng is really subtle, the "wein" is accented with a slight high pitch on the i, and it's all kinda compressed together.

I'd say most vietnamese and chinese words, when pronounced in the americanized way, are too long. They're more often pronounced short and ugly. Like vietnamese and chinese penises. ZING!

What does the ng sound like?

As when I initially look at the word I see nu-yen (im bad with asian stuff so didnt realised y = w in terms of sounds). This is because in NZ we have a lot of Maori words that use the ng sound.

For example; here's another similar but different test for you chumps (though I have given you clues in this post):

How would you pronounce ngawha correctly?

The hardest, and most commonly mis-pronounced, word in NZ has got to be ohau though.

well i know tons of people here in france called Nguyen, and they all pronounce it En-gwi-yen. I don't know how much it has been adapted to the french sounds , but i am pretty surprised that the real vietnamese pronounciation is so different from what they self call themselves here.
